We haven't actually been good in top level sports outside of soccer in a long time and it doesn't look to be changing any time soon, because nobody cares. The fan bases are just fine with being "OK". The start of the Red Sox and Patriots success came when they got owners who were smart and committed to winning. Kraft hired Belichick when literally everyone told him not to.
