Pope says ‘fake news’ dates to Adam and Eve, adds ‘truth will set you free’

by Alastair Jamieson

'Fake news' led to Adam and Eve’s original sin, Pope Francis said Wednesday.

Disinformation and “manipulative use of social networks” can have “dire consequences” and the world must embark on a “profound and careful process of discernment,” he said in a speech marking World Communications Day.

His speech was themed around the biblical verse: “The truth will set you free.” The pontiff also described journalism as "not just a job; it is a mission."

Fake news — a term popularized by President Donald Trump — is “a sign of intolerant and hypersensitive attitudes, and leads only to the spread of arrogance and hatred,” Francis said.

There is no such thing as harmless disinformation, he said.

"Even a seemingly slight distortion of the truth can have dangerous effects," the pontiff added.

He tied fake news to the Bible, saying it was first used by the serpent in the Garden of Eden.

“We need to unmask what could be called the ‘snake-tactics’ used by those who disguise themselves in order to strike at any time and place,” he said. “This was the strategy employed by the ‘crafty serpent’ in the Book of Genesis, who, at the dawn of humanity, created the first fake news which began the tragic history of human sin.”

Francis recounted how the serpent said something “only partly true,” asking Eve: "Did God really say you were not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?" In fact, God had only forbidden them to eat from one tree in particular, Francis said.

“By listening to the deceiver and letting herself be taken in by his version of the facts, the woman is misled.”

This pope should, but since he was elected, has taken what many say is a socialist position...Then, when your read all of what he says, not bits and pieces, anther view is presented... But, he should be less political, I agree.

He supports migration but he has a wall for his protection lol. He needs to just worry about his crumbling church

I agree as on that issue he ignores "article 4 sect 4" of our constitution...... His purported compassion, at times, dismisses states rights and the constitution...That is why many says he's a socialist...

Many incorrectly say he is a socialist because he is a Jesuit and grew up in a Argentina where he may have developed his religious and political beliefs in response to the excesses of the Peron regime.

He’s doing nothing outside of preaching Catholic Social Teaching, which is inherently and explicitly anti-socialist (though it also denounces the extremes of capitalism as dangerous to the theological and moral underpinnings of the Church).

No one says he is a socialist because he ignores the “republican form of government” and “invasion” clauses of the constitution. (Provisions so obscure we covered them for maybe 5 minutes in Con Law and I had to google to even remember what they were).

I have read the entire speech in the Vatican News and it presents a much different and in depth view... We all should read his entire speech, which is not long, but certainly not what some might want us to surmise....Beware MSNBC, NPR. CNN, FBI and Dept of Justice......Read the popes entire speech, not, cherry picked sentiment by an, NBC reporter....However, it was good to see and all news outlets might learn ????

Not Fox or Rush though, right!  Troof!

his job is to speak up on issues he feels needs to be addressed IMO... and when the leader of the free world is spreading his "fake" news propaganda around the world it is very dangerous!...as dictators around the world are following Donny example....Dangerous Donny....O.o
