Here is a link. The rule is not specific to IMG although they clearly were the poster child for its enactment. The bottom line is that no California high school who is a member of the CIF can participate in any sanctioned game, in any sport, against a ‘high school’ team that is not a member of their own state’s association. It’s really too bad because MD, Bosco and IMG should be playing each other. Over the past 30 years there have been multiple hoops battles between MD and Oak Hill. Gary McKnight and Steve Smith are very good friends and Oak Hill came out yearly to MD to play in the Nike Extravaganza.

Thx for posting. So Sierra Canyon can’t play Montverde in hoops anymore either?

They can’t schedule them outright. There may be provisions such as when they happen to be in a tournament together and they get matched up eventually through the brackets. There are a lot of national tournaments that Sierra Canyon and Mater Dei play in that has teams like Montverde, Finley Prep, Oak Hill. So perhaps they could still be matched up that way but I really am not sure.

Cool. Food for thought on how to get around the football rule. A tourney-style event over a few weeks may crack that code.

I'm not sure if it was just IMG that was the poster child. I was under the impression that that rule was put in place more by the wrestling community to penalize Blair Academy and Wyoming Seminary who began poaching top California wrestlers (Dominick Matta from Poway Cali State Champ). That barred Cali schools going to the Ironman in Ohio or any tournament that the top Prep schools wrestled. Blair got aggressive nationally after losing to Bergen Catholic in 2018 and went on a recruiting binge. The Ferrarri's from Allen Texas were also brought in but California's state wrestling body was none to pleased and retaliated.

Thx for your feedback. The CIF really loves neutering its members on the national stage. Smh.
