He barely played in one of those two losses that he started in 1987. He only started 6 games due to the starter getting hurt iirc. In 1989 he lost to Top 10 Miami. That was it...despite playing a schedule with 7 ranked teams. I think 5 of those teams ended up in the Top 10. Those ND Teams were no slouch. 1

He also had the best defense of the last 50 years helping him. He probably couldn't run a sub 5.0 forty. And those offenses weren't very good at all. Like you said, defense led the way. Rice wasn't playing when Pitt ran up a huge lead in the 1st half en route to their '87 win. And the '89 loss was a road game at Miami, who, while very much overrated that year, still represented a much tougher challenge than most QBs face. Probably no tougher than what Frazier overcame in the OB of the '94 season, though.

ChimpGrip
How about the best Nebraska vs Miami defensive lines from 1990-2003? Now that would be an interesting conversation.
ChimpGrip
The contrast between Miami and Nebraska, especially in that era, was fascinating. Not just on the field, but the way of life. Being out on the prairie, near farms and corn fields with lots of hunting and outdoor stuff. Versus being in South Florida with the beaches, hurricanes, etc. An interesting contrast that goes beyond football. Anyway, continue...
