Shanghai or Tokyo?

Where would you go to first for an Asian vacation?

Tokyo over Shanghai, not even close. - I don't want to put any more American money into the Chinese government's pockets + Japan is an incredible place in its own right. (All Nippon is the best airline to get to Japan)

Then go to Kyoto after, it's a couple hours away.

Go to Thailand or Vietnam after that. You can live like a king in Vietnam for an entire month. $500 will get you a really nice time in Vietnam, $1,000 and you'll be the elite in society (again, that's over a month due to how far the US Dollar goes there).

Kyoto used to be the capital of Japan, so that would be worth a visit. Also, check out Mt. Fuji!

Oh yes Kyoto looks amazing, very scenic. As is most of Japan. I've heard that about Vietnam, hardly anything will get you the royal treatment.
