Will have to research Matawan.  That’s just about when I started remembering sports.  🏈

Nice county and location.  Didn’t realize they had a powerhouse.

Nice.  That must have been Butch Woolfolk’s senior year.  They were pretty loaded.    A white kid beat Butch in the 220 yd dash that spring, I believe.  He was the 2nd of 3 backs.
Butch may still have Michigan track records, not sure.  Maybe because of yards vs meters.  😂

Louisiana had only 3 classes back then.

Anyways, a little of what St Aug looked like.

Not the best footage, but then the game was 45 years ago, 😧

St Aug purple jerseys.

Found this NJ list of state title winners…

Looks like Matawan had that one dominant year in ‘75, perhaps that was their last year on a long run.  No idea.  Hard to imagine a one and done would get ranked that highly nationally.

Union is all over this list during Lou Rettino’s HC era.

Looks like Butch Woolfolk won state titles as a junior and senior at Westfield.
He moved to NJ early in HS actually.

Passaic’s 3 in a row is thanks to Ironhead Heyward.

You’ll see a streak of Hackensack titles and that’s thanks to Greg Toal.

I don't know anything about the 1981 Calvert Hall football team but I do know that they weren't state champions, since they're a private school. Back then they were in the MSA which was Baltimore-area private schools plus Baltimore city public schools. The public schools joined the MPSSAA in the early 90s and the private schools are now the MIAA.

National Sports News Service was just a guy from Minnesota.

I guess you know more than you think you do. That's always a positive thing.

All I know is they were 10-0 and MSA champions in 1981. Private and City school Champ of Baltimore, I guess.

Is there any other football in Maryland?

Looking at the 1981 Calvert Hall schedule and the teams they beat if Calpreps had been around in 1981 Calvert Hall would probably have been #1 or #2 in Maryland.

Of course Calpreps is just a guy and his computer from California. 😧😆

The very first year of the USA Today Poll was 1982.

Very very similar to the National Sports News Service Poll.

They agreed on the majority of the Top teams, and shuffle here, shuffle there on the rest. About as good as you can do, I guess.

1982 USA Today Top 5

1-Moeller, OH

2-Valdosta, GA

3-Woodham, FL

4-Servite, CA

5-Enterprise, AL

1982 National Sports News Service P Top 5

1-Moeller, OH

2-Valdosta, GA

3-Woodham, FL

4-Servite, CA

5-Willowridge Fort Bend, TX

So I guess the guy from Minnesota was the pioneer in high school football polls.

His first poll came out in 1959 and lasted to 2000.

I knew they were nationally ranked.

Would be nice to see those years.  1992, for example, as that article was written during the playoff run.

One of the most underrated St Aug (NOLA) players from back in the 1980's was RB/FB Leroy Hoard. He was a beast and hard to bring down.

Played at Michigan and 9 or 10 years in the NFL. He was a TD machine both places. Made the Pro Bowl 1 year.

He wasn't a 4.4 guy, but he was a 4.6 monster with stumps for legs

St Aug has put 4-5 RBs in the NFL.

A true NFL factory similar to STA, FL

Ben Jarvis was another St Aug RB who had 6 or 7 good years in the NFL.

Remember him well at Michigan and was with the Browns.
