This is the fastest time in Texas set 3 days ago at freaking 1A and 3rd Fastest in the Nation.  This is 6 man Football. This is crazy if it is true.  50 Freaking kids total for K-12.  A small public School.  He ran 1:55.14 indoors earlier this year to win the Air Force HS indoor and has a 4:11.81 In the  1600m  the fastest time in State is 4:11:30

800m 12  Jake Merrell    1:52.53   TX       Turkey Valley  1A Regional meet.

This kid is a legend A bit of his background.

jake_merrell_x1.jpg

Jake Merrell lives in a small Texas town on the northwestern side of the state that has the distinction of sounding like a cat call.

"I live in a town called Quitaque," Merrell said, "but it's pronounced 'kitty-qua.'"

And it's what you would expect from a small Texas town. Population: 400. A couple stoplights. One gas station. The local high school, which brings in students from nearby Turkey, has about 50 students in grades K through 12.

Merrell is aware of all that, which makes what he's doing for his local track and field team so special -- his high school, for instance, has a dirt 440-yard oval as its main training staple.

The Turkey Valley (Texas) High Senior, who has three state championships to his name, is hoping to add to his legacy in the 800m and 1600m when he attempts to break 1:50 and hit 4:10.

Some highlights I've seen at districts around the state:

Curtis long jumper Lance Williams jumps 24-1. Sean Burrell of Zachary ran 45.88, 20.77 and 14.61 in the hurdles. Those two teams will be top 2 at state but Curtis should beat them. Mondo jumps 15 feet just to easily qualify for regionals. Regional action should start Wednesday of next week.

Bro thanks for the updates.  I saw that kid from Brock.

The combination of size and speed is pretty damn good.  I know for fact that track and field confirmed what recruiters thought they was seeing. 6’6” 235 lb only in his JR year.  —— With that size with good film - verified 22:6 200m - 50+ shot put - you qualify for beast mode in my book

Texas A$M got good one.

Tyrese Cooper is back and advanced in the 100/200/400 at districts.  He ran a  10.39 100, but strangely is showing as a no wind indicator finals... so not a clue there.  He qualified w easy 200/400 times. He’s still running 3 events even w an injury prone season.

He’ll likely be facing Thomas Burns in the 400m state finals (like districts but not 47 secs and change in cruise control).   It’s cool to see Burns opt for the 400 and that should hopefully give both a nice competitive push.

Cooper can outrun most on one leg.

This guy was pretty good football player -  Holds school records at Port Arthur Memorial in these events

110mH 13.55  2005
2005-04-30

300mH 36.03  2005
2005-05-14

In 2005 he lead the nation in both events

Typically if you show me kid that is a good hurdler - I will show you kid on the football field with good hips - meaning they can typically start/stop/cut either direction - Then add in the speed - You end up with special football player.

USC 19 year old freshman Twanisha Terry (MNW) ripped a * 10.99 100 yesterday.

She’s the 5th U20 and 2nd American (Candace Hill the other) to run a sub 11 100.

* USC is not trying her out for gunner on special teams.

USC’s Michael Norman (Vista Murrieta) ran an outdoor PR 44.53 in the 400. Amazingly, his indoor PR is quicker at 44.52.
