Reformatting The CIF Playoffs

The CIF as we all know has a convoluted playoff system. It should probably change with the times if a system similar to what Texas does is not feasible.

Fact is... most fans don't really care beyond the Open and D1. It's time to adjust to the current hs football climate and IMO adopting a format similar to college football should be considered. The fact that Folsom and DLS will not play again during the playoffs is total crap as they are clearly the top two teams in the North and despite the early game between the two... at this point of the season, we really don't know who is the better team right now.

The open can still be the top dog with the DI ( or probably a bowl game with a different name ) relegated to who is considered the #2 team in the entire region playing the recognized #2 SS team regardless of losing to the the SS rep going to the open... same for the North where a Folsom MD game for that second bowl game, if that how it plays out; for example, would be way more interesting than the Folsom Oceanside nonsense we experienced in the past.

I originally started this post as a reply in the "Some California news" thread but then realized that this may apply to a few other states as well. The game is clearly changing and the post season should probably change with it... at least for the upper level teams.

The lower divisions... D3 and lower for example in Ca. could continue as they are now formatted.

you would have to eliminate the local sections to pull this off and just have one CIF. i dont see that happening any time soon. Too many jobs and much money would be lost. the Southern Section has it own lucrative TV deal with Fox, why would they vote to eliminate their own jobs and have the SoCal school no longer get checks from Fox?

You can get rid of the BS of sending So Cal's good teams to the state bowls rather than its best teams by simply putting the top 8 into an Open Division and like basketball, make D1 also eligible for the state game. Hell, even the top 4. The D1 final 3-4 of the D1 playoffs are a forgone conclusion before the season starts.

Another problem is that if you did a true playoff with 4 teams, you would only have 1 NorCal team. If you did too 8 you would only have 2 NorCal teams. Top 16 only 4 NorCal teams...the system now is fine. Let the SoCal team fight it out in D1 and play DLS/Folsom in the Bowl Game.

As pointed out the sections themselves will be the biggest hurdle. You have 3 sections alone in NorCal that are ridiculous (AAA, NS and OAL). At best in a up year they have one good team and the rest are terrible and not many of them). They’re not sections they’re just leagues. They should at least be absorbed by the other 3 NorCal sections, SJS, NCS and CCS.

Taka a look at these “sections” playoffs. It’s not good, just a repeat of league games and win it and you’re a section champ. It happens in other sections but not until later rounds or championships and it’s night and day the caliber of teams.

Sections have too much power to let it go. LA Section is part of the LAUSD, no way they allow themselves to be part of the “state” system. What we currently have is the only thing the sections will ever allow.
