Yea - a lot of these top teams play all over the country around the holidys trying to f8nd their footing against solid competition.  It usually serves them well come playoff time in their respective states:

“Thomas Jefferson (Brooklyn, NY) - Going to Arizona over the holiday break to play in the VisitMesa.com Basketball Challenge, the Orange Wave would go 4-0 in the desert as they brought back victories over four of Arizona's best in Chaparral, Deer Valley, Perry, and Millennium.”

my good buddy coaches at Mount Vernon and they travel to tournments around the country during x-mass break......went to California last few years....not sure where or if they traveled this year...a great thing for these kids.

Bishop Laughlin always a solid squad.  They play in the NYC Catholic School league (Brooklyn / Queens Division).  They are always a threat to win the league.  It’s a damn tough league to win though.  Their most famous basketball alumni would probably be former Knick Mark Jackson.  Not sure of the specifics of this years team but you can bet they will have plenty of athleticism.

you guys down south own football...the northeast owns hoops...😉

wouldn't say that-California HSBB is top-drawer. As a guy who grew up on Long Island, it's not as good as it used to be (lots of top players leave to go the prep school route)-in CA the best play HS and club ball and if you are a top 4 team in the CIF-SS Open Division you are really good.

A couple of years ago they played a semifinal doubleheader at Galen Center (USC home court).  11,000 in the stands, teams included Sierra Canyon (Marvin Bagley Jr); Chino Hills (2 Ball brothers, Okonkwu), Mater Dei (Bol Bol)-the team that won was Bishop Montgomery (good talent and great coach).

You want NBA spawn?  CIF-SS has the sons of Rodman (DJ/JSerra), Pippen (Scottie Jr/Sierra Canyon), Shaq (Brentwood Academy) and next year LeBron.

The CHSAA (The NYC Catholic League) still has plenty of good teams and talent but it's nothing like its heyday. It was considered the best league in America for many decades. Now with the HS sports landscape having changed and kids leaving NYC for prep schools and better opportunities, those days are long gone.

Interesting that this has hit the CHSAA harder than the other Catholic school basketball hotbeds in the Northeast. Any thoughts on why? Just the closer proximity of the New England boarding schools?

Yeah I think it's a lot of reasons. Socioeconomics. The city has become so unaffordable, even in many areas of the outer boroughs. This has resulted in significant demographic changes in a lot of neighborhoods and people moving out.

The growing number of prep school/private school options has definitely had an impact too. These kids now have better opportunities on and off the court by going this route. They end up leaving the city for schools on LI, NJ, PA, New England and really all over the country for that matter.

all very true...you got a lot of NBA spawn out there....but the best talent HS talent is in the tri-state area IMO...look at the success of the N.J. schools too...St.Anthony's...St.Patrick's (Kyrie Irving)...St. Benedict's exc...the talent in NYC is spread out among the 5 burros and you also have talent out in Long Island were you're from (Danny Green - Wally Serbiack)...and the best hoops in the country is played on the playgrounds of NYC were playground legends are born and die...come to play hard or go home...😉

Check out this 1982 NYC all star team roster.  These days half of the players would be at a Prep school somewhere:

Mark Jackson, Pearl Washington, Olden Polynice, Kenny Smith, Derrick Chievous, etc......just an incredible of talent.

Easily half of them. Jackson, Smith and Pearl well All Americans as well as All City. They'd all most likely be at prep schools just like Cole Anthony and Cockburn are today.

very true...in southern California they still play HSBB. The top talent is mostly in 5 leagues:  Gold Coast (Sierra Canyon, Windward, Brentwood); Mission League (LA Catholic schools plus Harvard-Westlake (Collins twins among others-elite private HS); Baseline League (Damien, Chino Hills, Etiwanda) and Trinity (OC Catholic HS's plus St John Bosco-Mater Dei is a basketball dynasty, Santa Margarita (Klay Thompson), JSerra, Orange Lutheran, Servite). Del Rey league (Bishop Montgomery won state open division 2 years ago).  There are other schools that offer consistently high-level teams (Centennial Corona comes to mind)-but the ones mentioned above seem to be where the top talent gravitates.

In LA City Westchester and Fairfax HS's still matter (lots of college/pro talent through both of those)-but past powers like Crenshaw are not a factor as LA City area talent has headed to Gold Coast and Mission League schools.

I will say that when I arrived in CA a long time ago the local suburban public HS basketball wasn't very good-you would see players on HS varsities that lacked basic basketball skills getting regular minutes.  The talent is/was at places like Crenshaw HS, Dorsey HS, etc...now the overall level of play is much better (watching OC public HS teams the players do have basic skills if not the athletic ability you see at elite schools like Mater Dei or Bishop Montgomery).
