Colquitt County, A Saturday Morning Armchair Coach's Review 8/17/19

By the powers vested in me as an OFFICIAL Armchair Football Coach, I will share some thoughts on what I've seen... I have to start by saying that seeing Coach Rogers stepping in and taking the reigns, I think in the 10th week or so now, has been pretty impressive. He is clearly a good man and he has quickly organized and put his plans into action around the football program.Everything I have seen on that end has been impressive.

So the Columbia High School Tigers scrimmage game is in the books and it's time to get down to the brass tacks ahead of the trip north to the Benz for our season opener.

I don't think that I knew 100 percent what to expect going into the game last night. I've seen practices. I've caught a little of an intrasquad scrimmage before last night. As an armchair coach it's always a little difficult to assess exactly what you have until you start seeing some different color jersey's across from the team you are armchair coaching. I'm going to try to view this as a top 100 head to head as both teams appear in the top 100 of CalPreps algorithm at this time.

Looking at it objectively through the lens of top 100's facing off, and considering the company and what teams these were in the company of as top 100 squads, and similarly from the lens of past Colquitt squads I've seen a lot of, and also only grading the starters...

Offensive Line:   Many of us came in nervous about the trenches and overall, I was impressed with what we have there. They didn't lose too many times across the front. The qb was pretty well protected and the run game was able to move pretty well for most of the night. Honestly difficult to give a good full assessment when the QB was protected from contact, but, still easy enough to look at technique and power, etc. Even after one of the starting linemen left the game with a sprained ankle, the line held pretty well which speaks some to the depth there. TOO MANY PENALTIES We must clean that up.

Overall O-Line grade is a C+. Could have been a B to B+ if not for the penalties. End of the day, I feel satisfied that the line will be good.

TE's and Receivers: We come in knowing we have a really good TE in Carter Boatwright, already committed to FSU. He didn't disappoint. The receivers as an entire group look fast, and we saw some good catches. Tough to grade them out significantly on a night when the pass game did not appear to be in full effect. They were there and open when needed, which admittedly wasn't a lot of the time. Have to give credit to the Columbia coverage guys as they shadowed the receivers pretty well all night, just giving up a few big plays to the Colquitt play makers.

Overall Receivers grade: A-

RB's: Clearly the stars of the night. Colquitt"s offense went to the run game early and stuck with it most of the night. We saw action from 3 rb's, but the clear hoss is Daijun Edwards. Mar'Kaybion Spradley toted the rock for quite a few carries and "Tay Tay" Ponder saw a few touches as well. Daijun as a feature back is as good as any in the country right now. Spradley will clearly be a workhorse for us as well. Tay Tay didn't get to break away in the run game but he did shine as a kick return specialist... Would have liked to see Daijun with more touches, but, there was no need really.

Overall RB's grade: A+

QB: Good pocket presence and did show some nice scrambling ability at times. In general probably more of a pocket passer. He made good decisions and had a decent night tossing the rock. Saw a couple of overthrows across the middle where the receiver just couldn't get that high. Seemed like first game jitters to me though. Good to get those out of the way.  Solid night for Jaycee Harden.

Overall QB grade: A-

Overall Offensive Grade: B

Defensive Line: Appeared to show a 3 down lineman front most of the night only bringing the edge rush in occasionally. The push to the QB was not evident from the down linemen, but the edge rush did get to the QB a few times when it was in effect. Would have liked to see more push in there, but, must give credit to the Columbia O-Line as a solid squad.

Overall D-Line Grade: B

LB's: These guys looked really good. There are some headhunters in the middle for Colquitt County this year. They look decent in coverage when needed there, and also in stuffing the run all night. It's going to take some real hoss rb's to get through that group with much success at all.

Overall grade: A+

Safeties and CBs: A lot of young guys in there. We did see some misses from them in coverage when the Columbia QB started scrambling and buying time. All in all they showed well for a young group and I come away satisfied that we are decent in there and will get better. Gotta work on giving up the big play

Overall: B+

Specialists, Kickers, long snappers, returners: place kickers are off just a bit from the last few years. That is to be expected. Can't have an all-American type kicker every year... No touch backs on kick offs and a missed FG attempt early show we need some work in there. Both those kids are great kids and will improve in strength though. PAT's were spot on. The punter got a little work last night. He looked pretty durn good. He had one punt off the side of his foot that went out of bounds pretty short, but, overall our punter is not a weakness. Long snapping was good. No miscues from there really help the kickers avoid getting rushed. Returns were exciting at times with Tay Tay Ponder back deep, a lot of good stuff can happen.

Overall Specialists: B+

Overall Team grade: B

I was talking to a Lime Sink spy this morning and he suggested moving to the run game last night probably was initiated by the weather...and the several "scouts" from our 2019 opponents in attendance.  He said that there wasn't really a need to get creative in the offense.  He went on to say...that would definitely change next Saturday.

He told me the O-Line looked fairly intact...but said communication was still a problem.  Probably lead to some of the false starts.  Now...between me and you and NOBODY else....he said he was still a tad concerned about the Blackhats.  Not the players themselves...but the defensive schemes and calls.  He subtly implied he was not "all in" with our DC.  I mentioned that it was awful early to be critical...and he agreed.  Somewhat.  I reckon the proof is in the pudding.

All in all...the bright spots way outweighed the bad.  He gave Columbia high praise...especially their QB1.  He was definitely ready to try to add them to a regular season schedule.  When I mentioned...we drop the Corky...and do the Babe White Kickoff Classic in later August 2020...he got all excited and yelled..."Make it happen, Rufus !!!!".

So I'm recruiting you, CCBLACKHATTER, 94Packer and whomever else we can get...to handle this project.

I think the LimeSink spy is pretty spot on.

I tend to agree about the defensive scheme. Mobile qbs are the kryptonite for the scheme we are using and we don't appear to adjust readily enough.

To me, that same type issue got us last year in the Benz for the championship. Inability to rush the edge as you pull everyone into coverage let's these mobile qbs make time in the backfield. For the 3 man front to be super effective, we need some 5 star guys on there to go against these big solid O-lines of these region 1 teams and the top 100 type teams on our schedule.

I feel like some work is needed in that area. Not sure if we can afford to move guys from coverage to play as an edge rusher due to our youth in the coverage groups. Gonna need some young guys to step up.

All in all... I like the Lime Sink spy and don't even know who it is.

Good recap Hawg although, based on your individual group grades, your overall team grade should have been higher, say B+.

My question is ...In the opinion of those in attendance which of these teams would win a real game, and what would the margin of victory be?

From reading the thread it looks like the outcome would be 28-14 Coolhwip

Sammy...it's all speculation till you line up and play for real.   In a normal situation...Colquitt is gonna score more than 21 points with our offense.  And Columbia had several people who did not play...so who knows how that would have affected the game.   Don't put a lot of emphasis on this little scrimmage.   Now...I'm pretty sure it helped us in our goal to improve.   But...the proof of that is in the pudding also.   We'll know sometime next Saturday night if it helped...LOL.

But please take this as Gospel.....

Colquitt is Tier 3.

Coaching. I didn't put the grade on them but they brought the overall grade down to B.

I was refraining from scoring them because this was a scrimmage and it was clear we weren't doing all we could. Just trying to be fair to the new staff. They don't deserve tread marks on their back over a controlled scrimmage.

Tough to say as CHS apparently had some key guys out.

If the offense was full out for Colquitt, we may have put 40+ on the board against the team we played last night.

If some players were missing from the CHS coverage group, I can't say we would have scored that much.

I'm honestly guessing a similar outcome in the win loss column though.

The modesty of the Colquitbguys and the silence of Columbia fan tells me all I need to know about Columbia.  And none of it is good

Seriously they were apparently down like 4 starters.

I can't give an honest assessment. They are a hard nosed team. They look and feel the part of a top 100 squad. Exactly where in there, idk. CP has Colquitt 50 and Columbia 56.

I say that's fair enough for now given the limited nature of what we know.

I expect Colquitt to climb from there as the schedule unfolds and wish Columbia a lot of good wishes as their season unfolds too.

Their QB is legit and so elusive that 2 hand touch couldn't even het him at times. Colquitt's coverages were good and his receivers missed a couple that coulda been.

Well, I could've told you that and saved you the precious seconds of your life that you'll never get back because you wasted them thinking about Columbia football.

Yeah. B.

I think it was held to a B somewhat intentionally by the coaches though.

Outside of some miscues by the O-line, a couple of overthrows by the QB and the vanilla offense calling, it could just as easily been an A.

Just being honest with my take away vs. a top 100 squad.

I don't think posting a B against a top 100 squad is bad at all.

What if Columbia really isn’t a Top 100 squad?

You're forgetting that seven of Columbia's best players didn't dress. So I read.

At least five of ours didn't dress either.  They graduated in June this year.

Seriously though....I don't blame a HC for holding out players in a scrimmage  to keep them healthy.

What if frogs had wings? Do you think they'd still bump their ass every time they hop? xD

Idk bro. Maybe they aren't. I'm going by what the polls say. I'm just a Saturday morning armchair coach. Hahaha.
