Bormio
The Left seems utterly baffled by this question. Why do they lose over and over to a flawed, profane, narcissistic New Yorker who appeals to the heartland. A good economy helps, but that isn’t it. Conservative judges help, but that isn’t it. Border control helps him, but that isn’t it. It is none of those things. So what is it? During the Civil War, there was a drunkard, sloppy general who had failed at nearly every thing in life. Way down in his class at West Point. And yet he became the Union general who won the war. People could not understand why Lincoln sent Ulysses S. Grant to face Lee. They told Lincoln he should can him. To which Lincoln replied “I cannot spare this man. He fights”. Trump fights. And his supporters love him for it. Trump understands the source of this connection. As he says “They are not aiming at me. They are aiming at you. I am just in the way”. 1

Lincoln believed in grant and yes defeated lee to end the war. Than went on to be POTUS

Lincoln revered Grant so much that when Lincoln's advisors told him that Grant was a drunk, Lincoln responded by saying "send him a case of his favorite whiskey". Like Grant, Trump wins, as you said, because he's "sloppy", but tough as nails, a brilliant strategist (as it turned out), but relates with people. Which is actually pretty amazing considering his pedigree. I think that his experiences such as from "The Apprentice" opened a small window into Trump's mentality. He is a rich guy that understands the value of a "company's" most valuable asset...people. He's hilarious, and he simply loves America. Put this all together and we get what we have today. Pure awesomeness. There is no way that the shrinking number of irrational never-Trumpers can hold back this train. People can't help but like the guy as he perseveres day after day against the resistance.

Trump wins because American politics is extremely mild and the pendulum swings back and forth between Democrats and Republicans. The average Democrat will be baffled at the success of a Republican, just as the average Republican will be baffled at the success of a Democrat, because the average person doesn't have enough intellect to take seriously opinions that differ from his own. What's baffling is how ordinary men try so hard to turn other ordinary men into heroes or villains.

HSFBfan
Good news on the house front for republicans Trump is crucial to that path: A highly-nationalized presidential election that devastates the roster of Democrats in Trump-won and marginal Clinton-won House seats would represent the best possible Republican outcome. — We have 16 ratings changes this week; 11 benefit the Republicans, although there is good news for Democrats as well. http://centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/articles/the-republicans-house-chances-its-on-trump/
