Hint - it won't be a virus. If US society collapses, it will be because Americans decide to "burn the house down." It certainly could happen. Will it? Probably not in my lifetime, but in yours, who knows?

You could be right.  However, even during this obviously strange and unsettling times we are in, we have a tremendous opportunity to do things differently than we have been.  How many opportunities do societies, and the world at large, get to fix things that are obviously broken and put us back on a sustainable and equitable path to the future?  This is such a moment and all we need is the will to do so.  We already have good ideas out there.

The virus has shown us how capitalism, despite the talk of how great the economy is, isn't set up to handle crisis'.  And mostly all of us are 1 extended hospital visit away from financial ruin or 1 natural disaster away from ruin, unless you are the 1% that is.  Unsustainable IMO.

While we have been shutdown, we have drastically lowered pollution.  This should be eye opening for those who think that we don't have much of an impact on our planet.  Opportunities on the environmental front are right in front of us and easy to recognize.

I don't see us taking advantage of these opportunities due to the populace pointing fingers at each other and our elected working for big business and special interest.  I'm not sure why the denial of science (depending on your politics) has taken root in our country.  I get why special interest push that agenda but for the citizens to buy into it doesn't make sense.  Emotional over reason?

Maybe it will take an even greater crisis for us to get our priorities where they should be.  IMHO.

The Democratic establishment basically torpedoed the candidacy of the one person running that wanted to seriously pursue a different path. One that in my opinion could have taken the country in such a direction. I don't hold out hope that their position will change anytime soon.

So, we are left with Republican lite (the Dems), and old candidate who is probably in the early stages of dementia, and the far, crazed right (DJT's supporters), for the days of the Bushs' are done.

This is not a good place to be where sustainability is concerned.

Yeah, out of a country of 330 million and the best we can come up with is Trump and Biden, we can't say we didn't deserve what comes.

Not very encouraging.  But there was little hope for 'middle earth' either and look how they bounced back with the help of a couple of hobbits and a wizard, dwarf, elf, and a king.

A megalomaniacal man-child vs. “Sunsetting Joe”

If nothing else, America will be entertained.

1) maybe not, but apparently it is better than socialism or communism at it ........as virus proven...(BTW: always knew you were a commie...)

2) You might want to clarify how you think we are "somehow" polluting less without the gov and other watchdogs being active...less c02 from cars ? 🙄

3) Of course you would say something TOTALLY RIDICULOUS like this....here's a clue...you are not going to 'force subservience' with crisis...

...or take down capitalism...

commie

I might but I don't want to clarify.  Obvious is what comes to mind.

Do you think this country has it's priorities in order?  Subservience?  WTF?  Couldn't be more off base.

For the love of all that is holy, you insist on making the same mistakes.  You assume way too much and you are wrong every time you do that.

I'll let you in on something that should be obvious.  Unless I specifically state something like "I want to take down capitalism" or "socialism and communism is better than capitalism", you should not assume that that is what I meant.  Not sure how you even came to that conclusion anyway.  Moral of the story, just ask what I meant instead of being wrong with your ridiculous assumptions.
