For CalPreps --> National Rankings <-- to even begin approaching something resembling accuracy... there has to be state scaling, which is how/where 2 or more different states are rated in comparison to each other. Because of numerous factors, if all states were simply scaled the same... some states would naturally have unfair advantages over the others... 1 example of an unfair advantage is 1 states teams having a higher "ceiling" than the teams from another state. Meaning, itd be easier for more teams from 1 state to obtain higher ratings/rankings on average, or overall, than teams from another state even though that states teams havent done anything to earn those higher ratings and they arent actually any better than the teams from the other state. If Vermont was scaled the same as Florida, itd be possible for Vermonts teams to obtain rankings similar, on average, to Florida teams.... even though we all know Vermont is no where near Floridas level. So... to compensate for these rating errors, states must be manually scaled up or down .. the easiest way to do this is to add/subtract small amounts of rating points from all the teams within a particular state... this changes the states average team rating and the states overall point total (which is all the single states teams rating points added together) The best way to find a particular states most accurate scale (itll never be 100% perfect) is to look at the teams within that state thatve played OOS games, compare each teams rating vs the OOS teams rating they played, and see how the rating difference compares to the actual result of the game. You must do this for every single OOS game.. the exact way Ive done for a few states. NorCal under performed by -3.17 points per game vs. their actual ratings. So if you take away an AVERAGE of 3.17 points from the teams in NorCal, their ratings will more closely line up with their actual OOS game results.. which will give more accurate rankings for NorCal teams in comparison to the rest of the country. This whole process must be done for every state until their teams ratings match up with their OOS game results as closely as possible ... and then we will see some accurate CalPreps National rankings...
