It’s an ongoing experiment and works better in some places than in others. While living in St.Louis I encountered a fair amount of white people in communities like Granite City IL, Collinsville IL, and North St. Louis county, that blamed their position in society on EEO programs and gov’t handouts to people of color. I never bought into it. It got me into some heated discussions and cost us some friendships but so what. I’ve said it many times, the biggest problem in society today is a lack of personal accountability. It’s much easier to blame everything on someone or something else. One of my coworkers in St Louis lived in an apartment complex and had a black neighbor that he would drink beers with and watch football, one a Green Bay fan, the other a Bears fan. His neighbor was included in a Sunday expose in the St Louis Post Dispatch. He was one of several black families that despite having a good job and income failed to secure financing for a home where a white family earning a little less, less did qualify. What the article failed to mention was that (in the case of this one person anyway) the guy had nearly $2000/mo in auto loans making the debt to income ratio risky for the lender, and was offering 6.25% down. The white family had no car loans and 15% down payment. Yet, the article suggested that unfair lending practices were to blame when he didn’t qualify for the loan. This sort of disinformation creates hostility where there is no sound reason. And, it’s thrown about liberally in the media for all kinds of situations. For much of its history, humans flowed somewhat seamlessly through this physical space. Ideological representation of 2 places. Imagine that. Damn near 1900 before it existed.
