Ohio Week 7

Top ten holds serve this week. Nothing too shocking this week, but some closer than expected games. I dropped Winton Woods out of top 10 last week and they proceeded to lose to Anderson. They seem to have one of these unexpected losses every year, but they usually rebound.

1. Hoban (#1, IDLE) - The Knights got a week off to rest up as Walsh stomped their old rival. Now the two undefeated Akron powers go at it this week in the new Akron Holy War. Litmus test game for Walsh. Are they ready to challenge Hoban moving forward? vs. Walsh Jesuit on 9/29

2. Massillon (#2, beat Middletown (DE) 41-7) - The Massillon folk tried to convince themselves this Delaware power (is there such a thing) would be a good challenge, but I think just about everyone knew they would roll.  St. John's (DC), on the other hand, will actually be a good challenge. And they may have to take it on without the benefit of star QB Da'One Owens who had to sit this past week as the OHSAA explores the legalities of his transfer. If no decision is rendered by weeks end, Slaughter will resume duties. vs. St. John's (DC) on 9/29

3. St. Edward (#3, beat River Rouge (MI) 42-6) - The Eagles rebounded and made quick work of River Rouge with a running clock the entire second half. Junior QB Csayni was efficient through the air and showed what he could do with his legs on a nice TD run. Sophomore RB Brandon White is now the feature back and a threat in both the run and pass game. What would normally be the most exciting regular season of the week, this years Holy War has lost its luster with Ignatius having its worst season in decades and failing to score in its past two games. vs. St. Ignatius on 9/30

4. TCC (#4, beat Ignatius 28-0) - The Irish blanked Ignatius and continue to be a heavy front runner in D3, although Youngstown Ursuline and Bishop Watterson having been looking good as well. @ Toledo St. John's on 9/29

5. Avon (#5, beat Olmsted Falls 52-10) - No let down after thumping undefeated North Ridgeville last week, Avon destroyed a solid Olmsted Falls team even worse. Next three weeks should be tune-ups before taking on rival Avon Lake. @ Berea-Midpark on 9/29

6. Gahanna-Lincoln (#6, beat Westland 49-7) - GL is pretty much on cruise until week 10. New Albany has a solid defense, but should not be able to score much on GL and a running clock is not out of the question. @ New Albany on 9/29

7. Pick North (#7, beat Westerville Central 16-14) - Unexpectedly close game against a winless WC team this past week. Not sure what the story was, but PN may be looking ahead to week 10 already  @ Westland on 9/29

8. Glenville (#8, John Hay 54-7) - Another Senate league speed bump.  Just get us to the Hoban game already. vs. Rhodes on 9/29

9. Elder (#9, beat St. X 32-31) - Ramsey went for the gusto in overtime against X, opting for the 2-pt and the win after matching X's TD. Elder, X and Moe are all right there with each other, and the Panthers host a resurgent Moeller squad this week in a game that should decide the GCL-S champion. vs. Moeller on 9/29

10. Princeton (#10, beat Oak Hills 14-7) - Giving Princeton the benefit of the doubt as their defense looks top notch, but their offense appears average at best. I'd probably take X or Moe over them if they played this week to be honest. Lots of other teams knocking on the door to take the 10 spot. @ Fairfield on 9/29

Others: Moeller, X, Hilliard Bradley, Olentangy Berlin, Olentangy, Cleveland Heights, Lakota West, Riverside, Canton McKinley, Walsh Jesuit, Centerville, Withrow, Milford, Youngstown Ursuline, Winton Woods, Wayne

Drama in Tiger Town this week as the OHSAA investigation into Massillon’s transfer QB Da’One Owens could drag into next week, forcing Owens to sit out the St. John’s game while he waits to hear about his eligibility. Making matters worse, the other QB Slaughter is apparently injured and could miss several weeks, forcing the Tigers to roll with a freshman at QB. We’ll see if a ruling comes down prior to 7pm.

The OHSAA is also looking into a number of Glenville transfers this week. I laugh at the thought of a bunch of administrative pencil-pushers from Columbus working their way through that neighborhood to verify addresses.

I heard Owens will be playing tonight.
