Wooderson Posted November 25, 2023 Author Report Share Posted November 25, 2023 6A through 4A semifinals took place last night, with Saguaro and Mesa Red Mountain advancing to 6A final with a combined record of 15-11. Interesting to see if this will prompt a change to playoff formats moving forward since curtailing Saguaro's trophy collecting was an assumed rationale for the creation of the Open bracket. Small point of clarification - the 6A title is not officially recognized as a state title but rather a division title. This is due to the Open bracket taking the top 8 teams in 6A, 5A, and 4A, making it very probable that the division brackets will not include the best team(s) in those classifications (this is especially true with 6A where 14 of the last 16 Open qualifiers were 6A schools). You're correct about the combined records and how that's notable (the last time an Arizona team with at least five losses played for a title was 1993) but whether it's Saguaro or Red Mountain that brings home a trophy said trophy will not read state champions.
