Recommended Posts

Tier 1 - Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, SFA, IMG, Duncanville, STA

Tier 2 - Katy, St. Louis (Hi), DeMatha, DLS, SJC, North Shore, Lowndes, SJP, Marietta

Tier 3 - OLGC, Bishop Gorman, Colquitt, Grayson, Cen10, Lakeland, Miami Central, Allen, Gonzaga, SJR, Corner Canyon, Longview

Tier 4 -   Cathedral Catholic, Saguaro, McEachern, St. Eds, Mentor, Mission Viejo, North Gwinett. Grayson, Lone Peak (UT), Northwestern, Narbonne, West Monroe, Catholic -BR, John Curtis, Valdosta

Tier 5 -   Guyer, Buford, Hoover, Trinity* Bergen Catholic, Centennial AZ, Lincoln Way East. East St. Louis, Chandler, Dutch Fork, Mallard Creek, Columbia, SPP, St. X, Colerain

Tier 6  -  Servite, Folsom, DBP, Jserra, Alemeny, Hoban,  Rockledge (FL)

*Requests to add your team will be honored.  But must be Tier 6 or above to be placed on a Tier.

Below is an explanation of the Methodolgy used to place the teams on various Tiers.  The Tier concept recognizes that W/L records are a function of quality of opponent, and as such, RELEVANCY of opponent MUST be factored in.  The Tiers recognizes that in some cases, a 10-0 team (ranked in Top 100 by some outlets) could get blown off the field by a 5-5 (unranked) team that played a tougher schedule.  This is why the Tiers was created.

*Not attempting to rank every team, only the ones we discuss on this site.

*Teams are ranked appropriately for that week in the season.  Teams can improve and regress comparatively.

* The Tiers are fluid and subject to extreme fluctuations early in the year, leveling out as the year progresses.

*Tier placements consider a teams entire body of work, however are weighted heaviest on recent games and game weights decrease in significance in reverse order.  In other words, early road OOS losses to relevant teams can be overcome as the season progresses.

*Teams placed on the same Tier can compete with other same Tier teams and possibly win 2+ of 10.

*Basically there is a -10 point drop between tiers.  Could vary from a TD to 3 scores depending on the styles of teams playing.  This does not necessarily mean that there is a 30 point difference between Tier 1 and Tier 3, only that the chances of a Tier 3 team beating a Tier 1 team are exponentially less than the chances of a Tier 2 Team beating a Tier 1 team.

*The Tiers will ultimately be made up of (16) teams per Tier that would form competitive playoff brackets.

*Texas teams generally have not played enough OOS games to gauge properly #crapshoot.  There must be a daisy chain OOS connection for a reference point.  Teams with no OOS daisy chain connection may not be placed on a Tier.  (Texas exempt)

*Tiers are based on exhaustive research, Multiple games watched, and good gut feelings.

*This is a crowd sourced rating. All input will be considered and adjustments will be made as appropriate

Change in Tier 1 this week.

Mater Dei looked human in the first half which opened the door for SJC to show they could compete for a half.  This elevated the IMG, SFA, Duncanville, STA group into Tier 1.

SFA has rolled every team but Mater Dei with ease, putting them back into Tier 1.

Duncanville was impressive against an SJC team that gave Mater Dei all they could handle for a half.

STA has been winning with ease and was impressive traveling to DLS and winning by two scores.  IMG had a tight game with SJC, which held them down last week, but SJC performance for a half vs MD improved their status.

Some great games to come over the next month as SJB plays MD, SFA plays IMG.

Sorry boss! SJC is NOT a tier 2 team. How does a 4-loss team stay so high? Understood they have a tough schedule, but damn it...you gotta win some. No brownie points effort on paper if you don't produce on the field. Lakeland is more deserving of that spot. And keep in mind they have the latest head to head over STA...in a blow out.

I read the criteria about the tier rankings but what would precipitate a move for a Tier 5 team up to Tier 4. What would they need to do to make that move.

One of the reasons that The Tiers were created was to recognize  good programs that may not have a W/L record commensurate with their talent.  Most Lazy polls only look at W/L and unfairly penalize teams that play difficult schedules.

The Tiers look deeper that W/L records.  SJC is a perfect example.  They are 2-4, but there are not any other (non tier 1 teams) that would be better than 2-4 with this schedule, nor would have been as competitive as SJC was in those 4 losses.

Lakeland will eventually get a shot at T1. Need to let the season play out.

What's keeping them from being a "tier 1" team now? Is it the fact that STA has name recognition? Is it because STA beat DLS? Too many teams getting too much credit based on their name, including Miami Central. They don't get left out either.

Lakeland does not have a signature win like the other Tier 1 teams do.  Lakeland at this point is a great unknown, asking to piggyback off a game from last year.  Sorry but to many things change from year to year in HS football.

Gotta love it.

STA is there off name recognition (but then you named a top win that they have) but Lakeland should be there, instead, based presumably on name recoginition.

We get it.

You don't like STA. That's your right.

But don't then pretend that it's based on anything rational.

Never said I didn't like STA in no shape or fashion, so don't assume based on me just trying to clarity.
