1986 Phoenix Maryvale; backfield featured Darren Woodson of the Cowboys, Philipi Sparks of the Giants, and eventual state player of the year Kevin Galbreath. Eventual NFL lineman Frank Garcia was a sophomore on this team.

Dobson - 14-22 (L)

Alhambra - 14-27 (L)

Central - 35-0

Trevor Browne - 7-12 (L)

Chaparral - 49-27

Carl Hayden - 41-7

Kofa - 50-7

Yuma - 49-0

South Mountain - 34-20

McClintock - 42-21

St. Mary's - 23-21

Mountain View - 20-21 (L)

Maryvale is one of the more fascinating Arizona programs IMO, as they've had six undefeated regular season teams in their history but also six winless seasons. Peak in success was in the late seventies but were the last inner-city program here to maintain some semblance of a contender.

Double feature from 1946, an era when a crowd of over 18,000 at the Orange Bowl for a game between a team from MA and a team from VA was considered a disappointment.

1946 Lynn Classical (MA), with home attendances in parentheses where available.

Winthrop 39-0 (9,091)
Peabody 26-0 (18,451)
Gloucester 27-0 (8,594)
Arlington 12-0 (13,589)
Haverhill 49-0
Everett 14-6 (15,799)
Salem 26-7 (19,530)
Saugus 34-6
Lowell 44-6
Revere 34-12
Lynn English 27-27 (19,701)
Granby (VA) 21-14 (Orange Bowl, 18,391)

Classical's star was Harry Agganis, who was a first round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 1952, but turned it down to sign with the Red Sox...he died of a pulmonary embolism during his second year in the majors at age 26...

1946 Granby (VA)

Norview 66-0
Fork Union Military 27-6
Roanoke 46-0
Thomas Jefferson 43-0
John Marshall 28-0
Hopewell 19-0
Baltimore (MD) City College 33-13
Newport News 34-7
Woodrow Wilson 7-0
Maury 27-12 ("largest high school football crowd in Virginia history", estimated 26,000)
Clifton (NJ) 6-0 ("Oyster Bowl", estimated 21,000, including 2,500 from Clifton)
Lynn (MA) Classical 14-21

Granby's quarterback was Chuck Stobbs, who went on to have a long career as a major league pitcher, famously giving up an extraordinarily long home run to Mickey Mantle. Funny coincidence as after graduating high school he signed with the Red Sox and was assigned to their minor league affiliate in Lynn...who played their home games next door to where Lynn Classical played their football games...Granby's Hank Foiles also had a journeyman MLB career.

The newspapers had their priorities straight in those days:

Nogales 41-0

Coolidge 64-14

San Manuel 40-6

Miami 26-14

Hayden 53-12

Peoria 27-7

Team won the Class A (3A) title behind the efforts of star running back Art Malone, a future ASU standout that would play six seasons with the Falcons and Eagles. He shared the backfield with eventual MLB journeyman Paul Ray Powell. Malone would be followed to the NFL by several other Dust Devil backs through the years, including his brother Benny.

ARC is the oldest high school not only in Georgia, but the Southeast. ARC was founded in 1783. Glynn Academy is next, founded in 1788.

From the late ’20s through the mid to late ’70s, Richmond was usually a tough out on the gridiron. Until Augusta built so many schools that the talent was diluted. 30 losing records out of the last 45. And 3 .500 seasons. The winning percentage has dropped from 73% to barely above 50%. Close a few useless and under-enrolled schools and Richmond would be competitive. Maybe even good.

Augusta doesn't need more than 3-4 HS's IMO.

You have to consider the geography of the county. Keep ARC, Butler, Laney, and Hepzibah as 11th and 12th grade campuses. Cross Creek, Glenn Hills, Josey, and Westside for 9th and 10th grades. That is in my opinion that best option for Richmond County. Westside is depending on which part of the campus you are standing on, half a mile from Columbia County and their outstanding public school system. Lakeside is about 4 miles away and Evans about the same. That proximity has taken the shine off Westside when families are deciding where to live.

Savannah and Columbus has the same problem

Yes they do. And nowhere near the amount of money Augusta and its environs do. Ft Gordon, Medical College of Georgia, Savannah River Site, Cyber Command CenterAugusta University, plus much more heavy industry( Textron, John Deere, Ingersoll Rand, Kimberly-Clark, and more) than Greater Macon or Savannah.

Augusta has Ft Gordon home to one of the largest communication centers  in the free world. Plus Cyber Command. Columbus does receive more military money. Ft Benning is twice the size of Ft Gordon. But that doesn't cover the difference between the two areas. The Augusta metropolitan area is nearly twice the population of Columbus and nearly three times that of Macon. And Columbia County, most of it, is a Johns Creek replica. The buying power of Augusta dwarfs any place aside from the ATL. Homes are 20%more valuable than in Columbus, and nearly 30% than in Macon. And remember, SRS is where the bombs( nuclear bombs) are made. Much more brain power and transplants from all over the world reside here. Did I mention Medical College of Georgia? $$’s galore. Columbus has Wynton. A very nice area. Augusta has Summerville aka The Hill or a smaller South Tuxedo Park. The Augusta metro is booming. Even Grovetown, 25 years ago the mobile home and speed trap capital of the area is booming and affluent.

Hawkinsville is now a 1A school

NC is 7A...

Hawkinsville is a small farming and fishing town that has the Ocmulgee River running right through the middle of it...

Its a quiet town with a proud Football program and an amazing spot for fishing and camping...

And its not far from Warner Robins,Dublin and Macon About an hour at most if even that.
