It was the "Peanut Bowl" at Columbus, GA against West Springfield. Several Western Mass teams played in this game. Here's an article from the West Springfield perspective:

Buford current HC Bryant Appling has only been at Buford HS for 4 years and has won a state title 3/4 years...

But he is (obviously) not the first HC to win a title at Buford....

1978 Buford  state title season:

@ Crestwood (Atlanta,GA)  6-0 W

@ Cherokee (Canton,GA) 14-7 L

@ Berkmar (Lilburn,GA) 13-24 L

@ Central Gwinnett (Lawrenceville,GA) 14-14 Tie

Vs. Social Circle (GA) 52-0 W

Vs. Forsyth Central (Cumming,GA) 40-0 W

Georgia Mountain Conference Division 1A:

Vs. Feldwood (Atlanta,GA) 14-20 L

@ Dacula (GA) 75-14 W

Vs. Hart County (Hartwell,GA) 21-6 W

Vs. Athens Academy (Athens,GA) 20-6 W

Playoffs:

Vs. Banks County (Homer,GA) 34-6 W

Vs. Hogansville (GA) HS (Callaway HS Predecessor) 22-21 W

Vs. Feldwood 21-0 W

@ Charlton County HS (Folkston,GA) 7-6 W...

From Buford to Folkston is almost a 5-6 hour drive....  I can only.imagine that drive back in the 70s....
