His backfield-mate Sherrill Sipes also played at Notre Dame. Those Chattanooga Central and Oak Ridge teams were national powerhouses back in those days. Chattanooga Central played Miami that year and lost 19-18. Their only loss, along with ties with Flagler and Oak Ridge. Central played that Miami team the following season and swept them in two games.
