With a fractured foot bone I would presume he’s out for the state game also. But the Monarch D really stepped up big time last night. I think Jeff Fisher basically sums it all up here. (Photo by Paul Rodriguez, Orange County Register/SCNG) 0 Comments By Dan Albano | dalbano@scng.com | Orange County Register PUBLISHED: December 7, 2017 at 7:12 pm | UPDATED: December 8, 2017 at 2:31 pm Mater Dei’s 2017 football team is the best in school history, and it hasn’t captured state or national titles … yet. Those championships will arrive soon if the Monarchs (14-0) finish business against De La Salle of Concord (11-1) in the CIF State Open Division final Dec. 16 in Sacramento. Mater Dei is the imposing top-ranked team in the nation after the CIF-SS Division 1 final last week, but the Monarchs have stiff competition for the No. 1 spot in its hierarchy. Here are my top three Mater Dei teams in school history: 3. Mater Dei 1996: Mater Dei went 14-0, won the CIF-SS Division 1 title and captured the USA Today national crown. A high-powered Monarchs’ offense was led by wide receiver and CIF player of the year Rod Perry and quarterback Nick Stremick. Mater Dei’s defense impressed in a 17-10 victory against Loyola of Los Angeles in the Coliseum. The Monarchs also recorded shutouts in their first three games before surviving Irvine, 35-30. Mater Dei beat a talented Capistrano Valley, 20-15, in a rugged South Coast League showdown. The Monarchs, with a young Kevin Mitchell and Joey Boese, also defeated Long Beach Poly, 42-13, in the semifinals. If you like defense, this was your Mater Dei team. 2. Mater Dei 1994: Coach Bruce Rollinson’s first 14-0 squad claimed the CIF-SS Division 1 title and a USA Today national crown but collected a few other highlights. In a highly anticipated Division 1 semifinal, Mater Dei snapped Los Alamitos and Coach John Barnes’ 47-game unbeaten streak before more than 30,000 at Angel Stadium. At the time, the streak ruled over county football. But in the finals, Mater Dei defeated highly-touted Bishop Amat and Dylan McCutcheon, 28-21. Quarterback John Flynn, running back Steve Bodnar and a powerful offensive line powered the offense. The defense featured stars such as lineman Brad Williams and safety David Gibson, who played in the NFL. Is this year's Mater Dei team the schools's best ever? Too tough to compare teams from different eras. No, they are not the best.Yes, without a doubt.Probably, but let's wait to see how they do in the CIF State title game. Mater Dei 2017: Mater Dei dominated a challenging schedule to bring home its first CIF-SS title since 1999. Motivated by the disappointment of losing in the Division 1 final to St. John Bosco in 2016, the Monarchs handled national powers Bishop Gorman of Nevada and Bergen Catholic of New Jersey in nonleague games. Bishop Gorman was the reigning national champion. Mater Dei went 5-0 in the Trinity League, including a 31-21 victory against St. John Bosco. But the Monarchs (14-0) saved their best for the playoffs by dominating Long Beach Poly 55-13, Mission Viejo 49-21 and St. John Bosco 49-24. No Mater Dei team ever dominated quite like that. The Monarchs invoked a running clock against the Jackrabbits and Diablos. Mater Dei’s balanced offense this season featured record-setting quarterback JT Daniels, the best receiver in school history in Amon-Ra St. Brown and the best offensive line in school history led by four seniors. The defense was strong and consistent with pass rusher Nathan Logoleo, linebackers Mase Fune and Solomon Tuliaupupu and a young but talented secondary. Simply put, Mater Dei had no weakness. Combined with the Monarchs’ motivation from 2016, the results were the best in school history.

We played them four times and we didn’t get it done even once. That resonated with a lot of people then, like, ‘C’mon this is Mater Dei. Unfortunately, this DLS team just doesn't quite have the mustard this year to match up with MD. Baugh is going to need to have the scheme of a lifetime going to get it done tonight. Or MD takes a page out SJB's playbook and sits on a marginal lead with a clearly superior team. Don't leave the door open.
