Mike Pence Condemns Tucker Carlson’s Portrayal Of January 6th, Says History “Will Hold Donald Trump Accountable” For That Day

Former Vice President Mike Pence was one of the featured speakers at the white-tie Gridiron Club dinner in Washington on Saturday, an event that typically is a showcase of biting humor.

But speaking to the crowd of about 600 journalists, administration officials and lawmakers, Pence turned serious at the end of his monologue, this time to condemn Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s downplaying of the attack on the Capitol on January 6. He also used his strongest language yet to criticize Donald Trump’s conduct on that day.

Pence didn’t call out Carlson by name, but chided his characterization of January 6th rioters as “sightseers.”

“January 6 was a tragic day for him. I was there at the Capitol, and let me assure you it was not, as some would have us believe, a matter of tourists peacefully enjoying our Capitol.”

He added, “Tourists don’t injure 140 police officers by sightseeing. Tourists don’t break down doors to get to the Speaker of the House. Or voice threats against public officials. The American people have a right to know what took place at the Capitol on January 6. I expect members of Fourth Estate to continue to do their job. Make no mistake about it — what happened that day was a disgrace and it mocks decency to portray it in any other way.”

Pence recounted his experience at the Capitol that day, as he refused Secret Service pleas to leave the complex to ensure his safety.

“When I was escorted off the Senate floor Secret Service told me that I had to leave the building,” Pence said. “But I was determined to stay. I believed that law enforcement would soon have the situation in hand, never imagining what would unfurl, would occur. But it was there in that small office just off the Senate chamber, there was a small television set, and we watched what was unfolding outside — the mayhem and the rioting. You could hear it echoing outside, and soon thereafter in the hallways.”

He added, “I always told my kids that the safest place in the world is to be in the center of God’s will. I knew where we were supposed to be, doing what we were supposed to be doing.”

Pence then said that Trump’s conduct put his family in danger.

”I was not afraid but I was angry. President Trump was wrong. I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day. And I know that history will hold Donald Trump accountable” for what happened.

Pence told Deadline afterward that he made the remarks about Carlson because he was concerned about “that narrative taking hold,” meaning the Fox News host’s effort to minimize the severity of the attack.

Pence said that as the riot worsened on January 6th, his lead Secret Service detail came in for a third time, speaking “with greater urgency in his voice, saying that we need to leave the building. But I felt resolved. The more he insisted the more I did. I finally put my finger in his chest and I said, ‘You’re not hearing. I’m not leaving. I’m not giving those people the sight of a 16-car motorcade speeding away from the Capitol.’ “

Pence also praised the news media, telling the crowd that “we were able to stay in our post [at the Capitol] in part because you stayed in your post. The American people know what happened that day because you never stopped reporting. Your work inspired our actions and the actions of all the elected officials who reconvened the very same day and turned a day of tragedy into a triumph of freedom.”

The former vice president, who is considering a 2024 presidential bid, received a standing ovation at the end of his remarks.

Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to testify before Manhattan grand jury

Michael Cohen is expected to testify Monday before a grand jury in New York that is hearing evidence of former President Donald Trump's alleged role in a hush payment to Stormy Daniels, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.

Cohen, Trump's former personal lawyer, paid $130,000 to the adult film star in the closing days of the 2016 campaign to keep her quiet about an affair she claimed to have had with Trump. Trump has denied the affair.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office has been investigating whether Trump falsified business records when the Trump Organization allegedly reimbursed Cohen and then booked the reimbursement to Cohen as a legal expense. In recent weeks former Trump advisers Hope Hicks, Kellyanne Conway and several other witnesses have testified.

Cohen served prison time after he pleaded guilty to federal charges that included campaign finance violations related to the hush payment. Charging documents said Cohen acted at the behest of "Individual 1," who he has identified as Trump.

The district attorney's office recently informed Trump of his right to testify before the grand jury, sources have previously told ABC News. New York law requires so-called "cross notice" so potential defendants are afforded a chance to tell the grand jury their side of the story but the invitation is typically only extended if prosecutors are planning to move forward with an indictment.

It is not known whether Trump will appear. His lawyers have recently gone into the district attorney's office to meet with prosecutors, according to sources.

A spokeswoman for the office declined to comment.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has previously won the tax fraud convictions of Trump's company and its former finance chief, Allen Weisselberg, but Trump himself has never been charged with a crime. The Trump Organization said it would appeal the conviction.

Trump has dismissed the investigation as a witch hunt and has insisted he did "absolutely nothing wrong." His spokesman has called the possibility of an indictment in New York "simply insane."

Trump is also awaiting charging decisions from two other entities: the district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia, is investigating efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results on the state and a special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland is investigating Trump's role in the Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol and his handling of classified material.

Trump Blames Mike Pence For Jan. 6 Violence For Not Going Along With His Coup Attempt

Vice President Mike Pence officiates Jan. 6, 2021, at a joint session at the U.S. Capitol to confirm the Electoral College votes cast in the November 2020 presidential election. Pence was subpoenaed last month by the special counsel overseeing investigations into efforts by former President Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

WASHINGTON ― Donald Trump, whose coup attempt on Jan. 6, 2021, put his vice president’s life at risk as a mob of his supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol, on Monday blamed Mike Pence for the violence that day because he didn’t go along with the scheme.

“Had he sent the votes back to the legislators, they wouldn’t have had a problem with Jan. 6,” the former president told reporters on a flight to an Iowa campaign stop. “So in many ways, you can blame him for Jan. 6.”

Pence, who presided over the ceremonial counting of Electoral College ballots that day, had no authority to send “votes back” to state legislatures. In any event, Trump actually had tried to pressure Pence to simply reject the votes from certain key states and declare Trump the winner of the 2020 election that he had lost to Democrat Joe Biden, according to Trump White House officials.

Trump’s new comments, reported by CBS Political Director Fin Gomez, who was among the reporters on Trump’s plane, came in response to Pence’s remarks on Saturday, when he said Trump’s words and deeds had nearly gotten his family killed.

“President Trump was wrong,” Pence said in remarks at the annual dinner of the Gridiron Club in Washington, D.C. “I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day. And I know that history will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

Trump set the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol in motion days after the Electoral College had voted on Dec. 14, 2020, formally giving Biden the presidency, when he told his followers to converge on Washington the day of the congressional certification.

He had spent the weeks following his election loss lying that his reelection had been “stolen,” and he continued those lies through December and the first week of January. At a rally blocks from the White House on Jan. 6, 2021, he told his followers he would march with them to the Capitol and that they had to “fight like hell” if they wanted to save their country.

Four of his supporters died that afternoon, with five police officers dying in the aftermath. An additional 140 officers were injured.

Trump is now under criminal investigation in Georgia and by the U.S. Department of Justice for his actions. He nevertheless is running for the Republican presidential nomination and is currently the front-runner.

Liz Cheney blasts DeSantis over his comments about Russia's invasion of Ukraine: 'Weakness is Putin's greatest weapon'

  • Former Rep. Liz Cheney said Gov. Ron DeSantis was "wrong" for his comments on Ukraine.
  • The governor told Tucker Carlson in a statement that the war should not be a priority for the US.
  • "This is not 'a territorial dispute,'" Cheney said in a statement to The New York Times.

Former Rep. Liz Cheney rebuked Gov. Ron DeSantis in a statement Tuesday, saying the Governor was "wrong" for his comments on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

DeSantis provided a comment to Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Monday stating that the war was not one of the "vital national interests" of the US and referred to it as a "territorial dispute," closely mirroring the views of former President Donald Trump. DeSantis had previously side-stepped questions about his stance on Ukraine.

"This is not 'a territorial dispute,'" Cheney's statement said in a statement provided to The New York Times. "The Ukrainian people are fighting for their freedom. Surrendering to Putin and refusing to defend freedom makes America less safe."

Cheney, who now works as a professor at the University of Virginia, has been an outspoken critic of GOP members who support an end to US aid to Ukraine.

While in office, Cheney said that Trump's praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin would help the country's "enemies." Cheney also said that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stands "against freedom" for trying to axe aid to Ukraine, and she has called Republicans who have spoken out in favor of Russia's invasion the "Putin wing of the GOP."

Just another Trump lie....

FBI says it has no records related to Trump's claim he 'sent' agents to stop voter fraud in Florida during 2018 election

The FBI has said it can find no records related to former President Donald Trump’s assertions in November that he “sent in the FBI and the U.S. Attorneys” to stop “ballot theft” in Florida during the 2018 election.

In a letter dated March 6 and received this week by NBC News, the FBI wrote that it had searched its Central Records System but was “unable to identify records” in response to a reporter’s Freedom of Information Act request seeking any records related to Trump’s claims.

The FOIA request was submitted a day after Trump on Nov. 10 described how he delivered a 2018 election win to now-Gov. Ron DeSantis by having the FBI intervene to stop election fraud in Broward County.

Trump issued the statement at a time when DeSantis, a Republican and potential presidential candidate, was garnering praise from right-leaning media for his resounding re-election victory last year.

“[A]fter the Race, when votes were being stolen by the corrupt Election process in Broward County, and Ron was going down ten thousand votes a day, along with now-Senator Rick Scott, I sent in the FBI and the U.S. Attorneys, and the ballot theft immediately ended, just prior to them running out of the votes necessary to win. I stopped his Election from being stolen,” Trump said on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump’s claims, which he did not support with any evidence, raised serious questions about whether he used the power of the presidency to order federal agents to intervene in an election. The bar for the FBI to get involved in election tabulation is exceedingly high, with strict guidelines prohibiting its presence inside voting locations.

In the immediate wake of Trump’s statement, the FBI and the Justice Department declined to comment, but a former official later indicated on Twitter that Trump’s account was fabricated.

“Never happened,” former Justice Department spokesperson Sarah Isgur tweeted the morning after Trump made his statement.

Trump’s remarks also prompted Nikki Fried, a Democrat who was then Florida’s agriculture commissioner, to ask U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate the assertions.

“There was no broad allegation that the election was being stolen from Ron DeSantis in favor of Andrew Gillum. I know because I was on the ballot in 2018,” Fried wrote in a Nov. 14 letter to Garland. Gillum was the Democratic candidate for governor in 2018 who ultimately lost the race to DeSantis.

The Justice Department and Trump’s press office, as well as a representative for the former president, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

Trump’s statement in November did accurately describe how DeSantis surged ahead of his primary opponent, Adam Putnam, after he got Trump’s endorsement for the GOP gubernatorial nomination.

DeSantis went on to declare victory in the general election on election night in 2018, but the race underwent an automatic recount because his margin of victory over Gillum was less than 0.5%.

State elections officials later said they found no evidence of election fraud in 2018, although an audit in Broward County concluded the election was “not efficiently and effectively conducted.”

After Trump’s comments in November, a spokesperson for the Broward County Elections Office told the Tallahassee Democrat that the office had “no documentation of any federal law enforcement presence during the 2018 elections."

As part of its FOIA request, NBC News asked the FBI to expedite its search for records. The FBI later agreed to do so, writing in a letter in February that the request warranted the expedited search because it involved a "matter of widespread and exceptional media interest in which there exist possible questions about the government’s integrity which affect public confidence."

Stormy Daniels meets with prosecutors investigating Trump

NEW YORK (AP) — Porn actor Stormy Daniels met Wednesday with prosecutors who are investigating hush money paid to her on former President Donald Trump's behalf, her lawyer said Wednesday.

The news emerged as Michael Cohen, a former Trump attorney who orchestrated the payment, was giving a second day of testimony before a New York grand jury looking into the matter.

The $130,000 payment was made in 2016, as Trump's first presidential campaign was in its final weeks and Daniels was negotiating to go on television to air her claims of a sexual encounter with him a decade earlier. Cohen made the payment and arranged another payout — at Trump's direction, he says.

Daniels met with and answered questions from Manhattan prosecutors and is willing to be a witness, her attorney, Clark Brewster, tweeted. The adult film actor tweeted her thanks to her attorney for “helping me in our continuing fight for truth and justice.”

A message seeking comment was sent to the Manhattan district attorney’s office.

Earlier Wednesday, Cohen said he felt “great” as he headed into what he expected to be his final day of grand jury testimony.

Daniels has said she had a 2006 sexual encounter with Trump that she didn't want, but didn't say no to. Trump says it never happened. The former president's current lawyer said Trump was invited to testify before the grand jury but has no plans to do so.

Federal prosecutors in 2018 charged Cohen with campaign finance crimes related to payments to Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal, arguing that the payouts amounted to impermissible gifts to Trump's election effort.

McDougal, who was paid $150,000, alleged she had an affair with the married Trump in 2006-07. He denied it.

Cohen pleaded guilty, served prison time and was disbarred. Federal prosecutors never charged Trump with any crime.

Manhattan prosecutors have been examining whether any state laws were broken in connection with the payments or the way Trump's company compensated Cohen for his work to keep the women's allegations quiet.

Cohen and federal prosecutors said the company paid him $420,000 to reimburse him for the payment to Daniels and to cover bonuses and other supposed expenses. The company classified those payments internally as legal expenses.

Falsifying business records can be a misdemeanor under state law, or a felony if the fudging of paperwork is done in connection with a more serious crime.

Trump and his lawyers have said he was extorted into paying the money to Daniels and should be considered the victim in the investigation. Daniels and the lawyers who helped arrange the payment have denied extorting anyone.
