When aluminum meets ball.

West Monroe up 3-0 on Barbe after this John Pearson blast. Pearson is committed to LSU.

Nice crowd for the 5A public state championship.

The West Monroe/Barbe state championship Baseball game may have better attendance than most of Florida's state championship Football games. 😧😉

West Monroe beats Barbe 5-1> 5A Public State Championship

Catholic beats John Curtis 5-0> 5A Private State Championship

William Schmidt was just dominant as expected for Catholic. Lots of Scouts in attendance watching him tonight. Of course they have been watching him all year!

Yeah, we hate the Split in all sports ...... it is what it is though. It's debated heavily every year. Always a couple hard luck holdouts and knuckleheads.

Catholic did sweep a 3-game series with West Monroe early this year. That definitely will help the Catholic resume when they add up the votes for the myth national champion. 👇

Still it would have been great to see West Monroe play Catholic in a state championship game if it were to turn out like that.

Catholic finishes the year 38-2.

West Monroe 32-8.

Catholic will be #1 and West Monroe #2 in my Final Louisiana Top 15 Poll which will be released next week.

Been another great year for Louisiana High School baseball.

after all the hoopla and bad press surrounding last years State Championship game vs Barbe it was nice to see the 2 teams come together this year, showed some class by both teams...

This kid is indeed special.  Barely hittable at the high school level.  He will dominate next level and as long as he has a head on his shoulders and stays healthy, he should do really well in the pros.  If he develops a decent changeup look out.

Pretty good baseball for the 2 games over the weekend.

considering Barbe was only 8 miles from the site of the Championship and West Monroe was over 200 miles, Rebel fans traveled well...

The Souther Section D1 Semis are set!….

#1 Corona Holds off Aquinas 6-4…

#2 Harvard Westlake  Escapes a tight game against San Dimas 5-4….

#3 OLU’s Bats come alive after trailing 2-0 against La Mirada’s great pitching and win 7-4….

And Huntington Beach upsets Santa Margarita 3-2 in a terrific game with a walk off single in the Bottom of the 8th!!….

So it’s Corona vs HB and OLU vs Harvard Westlake….

Lets not ignore the great Padres of Carmel by The Sea!!  Led by their 5* OL Jackson who also pitches and plays 1st base are the top seeds and just finished off a GAB league title.  I mean if we have to hear about crap teams from other states then we can at least discuss the Padres with the the man child Jackson who stands 6'8 and goes about 320 all muscle.

Couple of Catholic (Baton Rouge) Bears having great MLB seasons.

Everybody knows about Aaron Nola who is currently one of the highest paid pitchers in MLB and 5-2 this year.

BUT, Josh Smith is doing BIG things for the Texas Rangers too.

In the world of MLB sometimes all you need is a chance. Smith is making the most of his shot 👇

Rangers’ Josh Smith Has Been a Remarkable Surprise in Josh Jung’s Absence

Texas Rangers All-Star third baseman Josh Jung had his wrist broken by an errant Phil Maton fastball. It was just the fourth game of the season. The situation at the hot corner seemed dark. Despite occurring on April 1st, losing Jung for eight to 10 weeks was no bad April Fool’s joke. Rangers’ manager Bruce Bochy has inserted a new Josh, Josh Smith, in at third, and he has played brilliantly.

Many baseball fans outside of Texas might not even know who Josh Smith is, and that is fair. He played collegiate baseball for LSU. In 2017, he was the starting third baseman for their College World Series runner-up team. After missing most of 2018 due to injury, Smith was not only the leader of the Tigers’ offense but also their starting shortstop.

Smith was drafted in the second round of the 2019 MLB draft by the New York Yankees. Then, in July of 2021, he was traded to the Rangers as part of the trade package for slugger Joey Gallo. Let’s just say that, in hindsight, the trade worked out in Texas’ favor.

Offensive Numbers for Josh Smith

This season marks Smith’s third being in the big leagues. In 2022, the left-handed hitting utility guy played the back-and-forth game between Arlington and Triple-A Round Rock. Then, last season, he shared the super utility role with Ezequiel Duran. Duran also came over from the Yankees in the Gallo trade.

In 2023, Smith was solid defensively but was less than stellar at the plate. He was scrappy and did help in some key situations, but overall, he struggled offensively. That is not the case this season.

Not only has Smith been a bright spot for the Rangers, but his numbers have also landed him in the top part of the league-wide rankings. After Monday night’s game in Oakland, Smith is hitting .300/.412/.480, has 10 doubles, one triple, two home runs, has scored 18 runs, has 15 RBI, and has a wRC+ of 158 in 119 plate appearances.

Smith OBP Behind Only Soto in American League

With an fWAR of 1.3, he is second on the team to only Marcus Semien, who has 1.4 fWAR. It should be noted that Smith had a career -0.2 fWAR heading into this season.

And where does that robust .412 OBP put him on the MLB rankings?

Smith is currently second in the American League behind only Juan Soto and is tied for 6th overall. He is walking at an 11.8% clip and only striking out 18.5% of the time.

Another category that Smith excels in, and it is a painful one, is being hit by pitch. He has already been plunked five times this year. Over his short career, he has been beaned 21 times in total. This season, Smith has backed off the plate a bit. Maybe his bruises with laces in the middle of them will decrease in the future.

Although unofficial, it is quite possible that Smith leads MLB in the most times that he has lost his helmet. Not just from running around the bases but from simply swinging. It is quite remarkable, actually, and is noticeable even to the casuals.

However, the actual numbers and baseball sense that Smith continues to demonstrate have helped keep the Rangers at the top of the AL West along with the Seattle Mariners. Not too shabby for a guy that wouldn’t have had an everyday job without the terrible injury to Jung.

Corona needs to lose that game.

Corona or Baton Rouge Catholic will be your myth National Champions this year either way.

It was destined to be early in the year.

They would likely have to play Harvard Westlake again….
