1. Dallas Parish Episcopal Panthers (TAPPS Division I, District 1)
2022 RECORD: 12-1

HEAD COACH: Daniel Novakov

THREE TO SEE

Sawyer Anderson, quarterback, jr. — A second-team TAPPS all-state pick last year, he threw for 3,208 yards and 37 touchdowns in his second year starting. He holds multiple Division I offers, but Anderson recently committed to Purdue.

Caleb Mitchell-Irving, defensive line, sr. — The Purdue pledge will be a key player on a defense that lost eight starters off last year’s team. He had 96 tackles in 2022.

Maddux Reid, running back, sr. — He led the team in rushing with 1,038 yards and 18 touchdowns last year. The Southlake resident committed to Harvard in July.

DALLAS PARISH EPISCOPAL'S CASE FOR A  STATE TITLE

The Panthers rolled to the TAPPS Division I championship, scoring an average of 45 points and gave up only 11 points per game in three postseason games. They have won four straight championships, but will have to replace 13 players that are now at the collegiate level.

2. China Spring Cougars (4A-1 Region II, District 5)

2021 RECORD: 15-1

HEAD COACH: Tyler Beatty

THREE TO SEE

Cash McCollum, quarterback, sr. — The North Texas pledge threw for 3,201 yards with 37 touchdowns last year. He was the 5-4A offensive MVP in his first year at the school after transferring from Wimberley.

Kyle Barton, running back, sr. — The first-team all-state running back ran for 1,821 yards — 7.4 yards per carry — with 33 total touchdowns.

Greydon Grimes, tight end/defensive end, sr. — A 6-foot-5 target on offense, he had 62 tackles and seven sacks last year. He’s committed to Baylor, where his brother Garrison is a long snapper and his dad, Jeff, is the offensive coordinator.

CHINA SPRING'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

It’s hard to not assume the Cougars won’t continue their trajectory the last two years, going 31-1, with the only loss against the No. 1 ranked team on this list in Week 5 last season. They repeated as state champions last year and will have five starters back on both sides of the ball this season.

3. Carthage Bulldogs (4A-2 Region II, District

2022 RECORD  16-0

HEAD COACH  Scott Surratt

THREE TO SEE

Kash Courtney, offensive line, jr. — Experienced tackle has offers from Baylor and Houston on the O-line, and is a menace on both sides of the ball for Carthage.

Colt Hodges, defensive line, jr. — A first-team all-district pick, he had five sacks, 19 TFLs and 64 tackles while playing defensive end/defensive tackle.

Jett Surratt, quarterback, soph. — The coach’s son will move into the starting quarterback role this year. He already has offers from Texas Tech, UTSA and Houston.

CARTHAGE'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

The Bulldogs have been almost a shoo-in to hoist a trophy if they reach the finals, winning nine titles in 10 trips. Carthage has lost only seven games in the playoffs under Surratt, who took over in 2007. The Bulldogs are returning five starters on offense and four on defense, but will have some key pieces to replace on both sides of the ball, including all-state two-way standout Larandion Dowden (1,095 rushing yards, 20 touchdowns), who transferred to Willis Point. The defense, though, will have some key players back up front.

4. Dallas Christian Chargers (TAPPS Division III, District 2)

2022 RECORD  13-1

HEAD COACH  Mike Wheeler

THREE TO SEE

Luke Carney, quarterback, jr. — He is 26-2 as a starter with a pair of state titles as the signal caller. He accounted for more than 3,000 yards last year, passing for 2,241 with 33 touchdowns.

Will "Speedy" Nettles, WR/DB, sr. — He’s a two-way starter for the Chargers, and Nettles recorded 1,455 yards receiving and 20 touchdowns last year. He’s committed to Purdue.

Porter Nix, offensive line, sr. — He will be helping anchor a revamped offensive line for Carney. The 6-foot-4, 285-pounder tweeted Navy, Air Force and Harvard are his final three choices for college.

DALLAS CHRISTIAN'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

The team will have to fill some holes from last year’s roster with seven offensive starters back and five on defense, but the team will have some stalwarts that will be future Division I players. The offense could carry this team early. The defense last year was particularly stingy by giving up only seven points on the way to the TAPPS Division III championship.

5. Franklin Lions (3A-1 Region III, District 11)
2022 RECORD  16-0

HEAD COACH
Mark Fannin

THREE TO SEE

Jayden Jackson, running back, jr. — A first-team all-state pick, Jackson was the championship game offensive MVP after running for 146 yards. He picked up an offer this offseason from Texas Tech.

Devyn Hidrogo, defensive back, sr. — He’s a three-sport athlete that plays basketball and does the high jump in track and field. Hidrogo, a first-team all-state pick, has picked up offers from Vanderbilt, Tulane, Tulsa, Louisiana Tech and TCU since May.

Colby Smith, linebacker, sr. — The third returning first-team all-state player, Smith recovered a fumble in the state title game that stopped a Brock drive inside the 20.

FRANKLIN'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

The reigning champions will start 2022 with a 32-game winning streak after winning the Class 3A Division I state title last year with a close 17-14 win against Brock. That came a year after winning the Class 3A Division II title. Now they will be a favorite in the class and returns six starters on both sides of the ball. Four of the team’s seven all-staters last year return.

6. Gunter Tigers (3A-2 Region II, District

2022 RECORD 15-0

HEAD COACH  Jake Fieszel

THREE TO SEE

Cannon Lemberg, wide receiver, sr. — He’s the top returning receiver from last year’s roster with 543 yards and six touchdowns. He’s committed to Stephen F. Austin.

Walker Overman, quarterback, sr. — He threw for 1,184 yards and 14 touchdowns while rushing for four more on the ground.

Colin Peacock, defensive back, jr. — He’s the lone first-team returning all-stater for the Tigers from last year. He earned defensive MVP honors in last year’s title game and holds offers from Oklahoma, Utah State, North Texas, UTSA and Sam Houston State.

GUNTER'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

A reigning state champion is hard to leave off this list despite wholesale changes this season. The Tigers won their third state title in program history last year and the second since 2019. The team will return only three starters on offense, but having a quarterback returning is a good place to start.

7. Timpson Bears (2A-1, Region III, District 11)
2022 RECORD 14-1

HEAD COACH Kerry Therwhanger

THREE TO SEE

Terry Bussey, Timpson's do-it-all senior.

Terry Bussey, quarterback, sr. — He accounted for nearly 5,000 yards last year between passing (2,177) and running (2.596), throwing for 26 touchdowns and running for another five. He also added 115 tackles and intercepted five passes. Holds numerous Power 5 offers.

Vosky Howard, wide receiver/linebacker, sr. — He was a 1,000-yard receiver last year with 14 touchdowns. He has eight Division I offers, including Auburn, Houston and Texas Tech.

Tyler Lane, linebacker, sr. — An all-state linebacker, he posted 180 tackles and four sacks last year. He was the District 11-2A Defensive MVP last year.

TIMPSON'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

The Bears have one of the most exciting players in the country in Bussey. On top of that, they reached the semifinals last year, falling to Refugio in that round. Last year marked the third straight year with only one loss for Timpson, and over the past three years, they are 40-3. The team is loaded with two-way standouts that will have a chance to play at high-level Division I teams. In 12 of the 14 wins, the Bears scored at least 40 points.

8. Anna Coyotes (4A-1, Region II, District 😎
2022 RECORD  13-1

HEAD COACH  Seth Parr

THREE TO SEE

Jacob Emmers, wide receiver, sr. — He holds offers from Memphis, Tulsa and UTSA. Had 1,241 yards and 18 touchdowns last year.

CJ Miller, linebacker, sr. — A ballhawk in the middle of the defense, he recorded 166 tackles last year. He’s also an all-state wrestler for the Coyotes.

Ziondre Williams, quarterback, soph. — He’s QB1 heading into the fall, and already has an offer from Texas State despite not making a varsity start at that position.

ANNA'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

Anna has posted a 20-4 mark the past two seasons, and the only loss last year was against state champion China Spring at regionals. Seven starters are back on both sides of the ball for Anna, but three of the starters that are gone were all-staters last fall. A key will be how the offense responds after losing Evan Bullock (Louisiana Tech) and Jambres Dubar (Boise State). The Coyotes reached the 7-on-7 state tournament title game this summer.

9. Tyler Chapel Hill (4A-1, Region II, District
2022 RECORD  12-3

HEAD COACH  Jeff Riordan

THREE TO SEE

Demetrius Brisbon, quarterback, jr. — The District 9-4A MVP threw for 2,211 yards and ran for 1,430 more, with a combined 47 touchdowns. He’s committed to SMU.

Rickey Stewart, running back, jr. — He holds a bevy of D-I offers but chose to head to SMU, though Tennessee offered him after he pledged to the Mustangs. Ran for 2,262 yards and 18 scores on the way to all-state honors in 2022.

Da’Veon Ross, linebacker, sr. — Racked up a team-high 162 tackles with 12 TFLs and seven sacks last season. Holds three Division I offers.

chapel-hill-little-cypress-mauriceville-texas-football00002

CHAPEL HILL'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

After starting last year 0-2, the Bulldogs rattled off 12 straight wins and rode that success to a state semifinal berth for the second straight year. The win streak last year ended against Boerne, but Chapel Hill returns 15 of 22 starters from that roster. Nine of those starters are returning for an offense that scored 40.1 points per game.

10. Canadian Wildcats (3A-2 Region I, District 3)

2022 RECORD  12-3

HEAD COACH  Andy Cavalier

THREE TO SEE

Wyatt Davis, linebacker, jr. — Put up 151 tackles, 37 TFLs, four sacks and two interceptions last fall for the Wildcats.

Camren Cavalier, quarterback, sr. — He threw for 3,069 yards and 31 touchdowns while adding another 36 touchdowns on the ground with 1,537 yards rushing.

Preston Miller, wide receiver, sr. — He became Cavalier’s go-to weapon in passing with 69 catches for 1,319 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2022.

CANADIAN'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

Gave state champion Gunter all it wanted in the semifinals, an eventual 21-20 loss. The offense averaged 400 yards per game last year with five games of 60 or more points. The Wildcats return six starters on offense and five on defense. Coach Cavalier takes over as the head coach after spending the past nine years as the defensive coordinator.

2022 RECORD  13-1

Luke Medina, running back, sr. — He earned all-state honors last year at all-purpose after rushing for 991 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Aiden Hinojoas, defensive line, sr. — Recovered three fumbles and had seven quarterback hurries from his spot on the defensive line.

12. Albany Lions (2A Region II, District 6)

2022 RECORD 14-2

HEAD COACH Denney Faith

Wyatt Windham, defensive back, sr. — He was the Class 2A co-defensive player of the year last year after posting 140 tackles, 11 pass breakups and five interceptions.

ALBANY'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

The program racked up its third state title last year — and the first since 1961 — with a win in the Class 2A Division II finals. One of the two losses last year came against fellow state champion Hawley in Week 3. The Lions have won 37 games the past three years and the expectations for another double-digit win total are there, plus more. Four all-staters are back for the Lions this fall, a good building block to repeat.

13. Texarkana Pleasant Grove Hawks (4A-2 Region II, District 7)
2022 RECORD 11-3

HEAD COACH Josh Gibson

THREE TO SEE

Ahkhari Johnson, quarterback/defensive back, sr. — A standout player on both sides of the ball, he’s headed to Arkansas. He threw for 1,710 yards and had 33 total touchdowns between throwing and rushing. He will play defense in college.

Jaylen Boardley, running back, sr. — He’s a three-sport player that has football offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor and Oklahoma State to name a few. Combined for 929 yards and nine touchdowns running and catching the ball last fall.

Lance Jackson, tight end/defensive line, jr. — The four-star defensive lineman holds multiple Division I offers from Power 5 schools after having 63 tackles, 11 TFLs and two sacks last year.

PLEASANT GROVE'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

The Hawks' only setbacks last year from Texas foes were to eventual state champion Carthage and Gilmer, a district foe that was 11-1 last year. The offense will return nine starters, while the defense will have eight players back, a good building block to contend for a title. Most of these seniors came into high school the year after the Hawks won a state title.

14. Mart Panthers (2A-2 Region III, District 10)
2022 RECORD 15-1

HEAD COACH Kevin Hoffman

THREE TO SEE

Monte Swaner, defensive end, sr. — The returning district MVP and all-stater had 111 tackles, 29 TFLs, six sacks, 24 quarterback hurries and a defensive touchdown last year.

Jonah Ross, quarterback, sr. — He completed 67% of his passes last year for 38 touchdowns and 2,559 yards in his first year starting. On the ground, he added 1,080 yards and 21 more TDs.

Ja’Deriun Bell, running back, jr. — Bell averaged 124 yards per game last year, on his way to a 35-touchdown campaign with 1,989 yards. The all-stater eclipsed 100 yards in 11 of the team’s 16 games.

MART'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

The Panthers reached the state finals last year, falling to Albany in the Class 2A Division II finals. They are another team that has had a lot of success lately, posting a 40-3 mark the past three seasons. The offense that scored 60 or more points seven times last year returns six starters. The defense posted seven shutouts last year and returns seven starters.

BOERNE'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

PRESTONWOOD CHRISTIAN ACADEMY'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

They were the runners-up in TAPPS Division I last year, falling to Parish Episcopal. That was the program’s fifth time in the final over the past 10 years. In his first year at the helm, Yantis saw the team overcome a slow start by winning seven in a row, while two of the three losses came against the state champions. They added a Division I recruit to play quarterback this offseason to an offense that averaged 402 yards per game in 2022.

17. Silsbee Tigers (4A-2 Region III District 9)
2022 RECORD 13-1

HEAD COACH Randy Smith

THREE TO SEE

Dre’lon Miller, wide receiver, sr. — He was a first-team all-state pick at wide receiver last year after hauling in 24 touchdowns and rolling up 1,399 yards. The five-star recruit is uncommitted, but will get a chance to go almost anywhere he wants.

Garry White, defensive end/tight end, sr. — The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder had 107 tackles, 19 TFLs, three forced fumbles and recorded seven sacks last year.

LaMarcus Botley, defensive back, sr. — He’s a two-time district defensive player of the year. Had 92 tackles and three interceptions.

SILSBEE'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

The Tigers made big strides last year, winning 13 games — one more than the two previous years combined. The only blemish was a two-point loss in the playoffs to Cuero. The Tigers return 15 of 22 starters, with eight of them on the offensive side of the ball. The offense tallied 40 or more points in nine of the 14 games. A big key will be replacing current Mary Hardin-Baylor quarterback Mason Brisbane, who threw for 41 touchdowns and 2,844 yards. The team will lean heavily on Miller to keep the offense churning.

18. Refugio Bobcats (2A-1 Region IV, District 15)

2022 RECORD 14-2

HEAD COACH Jason Herring

Kaleb Brown, linebacker, sr. — A first-team all-state pick, Brown recorded 150 tackles.

REFUGIO'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

There are 17 starters back from a team that made the 2A Division I finals last season, falling to Hawley. The Bobcats had six all-state picks last year, and four of them return this fall. The Bobcats rattled off a 14-game winning streak last year after losing in Week 1. Refugio averaged 50 points on offense while giving up 19 per game in 2022.

19. Hawley Bearcats (2A-1 Region I, District 4)

2022 RECORD 16-0

HEAD COACH Mitch Ables

THREE TO SEE

Diontay Ramon, wide receiver/defensive line, sr. — He led the team in receiving last year with 53 catches, 1,204 yards and nine touchdowns, which was a shared team-high. Was a first-team all-state pick at wide receiver, but had a team-high 25 TFLs from his defensive line spot.

Chandlin Myers, wide receiver/defensive back, sr. — Shared the team lead with four interceptions and also caused two fumbles. Added 680 yards and eight scores catching the ball.

Landon Sykora, defensive line, sr. – Is the team’s top returning tackler with 75 stops last year, while adding 19 TFLs.

HAWLEY'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

The Bearcats picked up their first state title last year — a year after falling to Shiner in the championship. The Bearcats will have a lot of pieces to fill in with nine of 22 starters back, but they are the defending state champions until they aren’t. The offense will have to find a new quarterback and running back after the previous tandem combined for 79 touchdowns. However, two of the team’s top receivers are back for new quarterback Keagan Ables, a junior that had a 103.9 rating in limited action.

20. Wimberley Texans (4A-2 Region IV, District 13)

2022 RECORD 15-1

HEAD COACH Doug Warren

THREE TO SEE

Cody Stoever, quarterback/linebacker, jr. — In his first year starting, he threw for 2,441 yards and 31 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,170 yards and 20 scores.

Ty Thames, running back/linebacker, jr. — Played primarily on defense last year, recording 54 tackles and nine TFLs.

Noah Birdsong, wide receiver/defensive back, sr. — At 6-foot-4, he provides a tall target for Stoever. Last year, the all-district pick had six touchdowns and 638 yards receiving.

WIMBERLEY'S CASE FOR A STATE TITLE

The Texans returned to a state title game for the second time in four years, but the Austin-area school lost in the finals to Carthage. This will be a reloading of sorts with only four back on offense, but that includes Stoever, Birdsong and offensive tackle Caden Romo, an all-state pick last year. The defense will have five starters back from a unit that averaged more than one interception and just under one fumble recovery per game.

CE Byrd is replacing 20 starters this year.

If the Beast of East Texas  Pleasant Grove can't beat CE Byrd this year they won't ever beat them.

CE Byrd going to take some major spankings this year. Ruston tossed Byrd around like a rag doll last week in their scrimmage.

Guyer lost alot from last years team. I think both them and Highland Park take a good step back this year.
