Question to the sanctimonious believers out there : Is this murder or fixing a terrible mistake made under the influences of drugs or alcohol ? The O.P. But your question begs to what the determination of a viable fetus is. I think arguments could be made that within the first couple of weeks, no it is not viable. Still to avoid abortions of convenience, contraception is a pretty reliable and easy solution to avoid creating the dilemma. Late term abortions are a different thing altogether. If you prescribe to the idea that once the egg has been fertilized, and thereafter it is a developing life, well then, in the US alone, abortions regularly claim over a million lives a year. But given our system of government (separation of Church and State), I can see the arguments behind it not being a viable and/or truly human being (yet). Organs start developing at just four weeks. There's a heart beat at 5. At 6, facial features begin to be recognizable. By 14 weeks the baby can suck its thumb. At 16, gender can be determined. There are arguments that pain can be felt even within the first trimester. Even given the above, you don't have to invoke God to believe life begins at conception. I started at a Catholic grammar school. When my parents were late with the tuition a nun took me out of class to sit in the office until payment could be arranged.
