Hawg needs a little guidance in a deal...

I have a barn find 1977 Corvette that is still incomplete. Just over 65k original miles. Rebuilt 350 engine (unsure but don't think matching numbers to the car)  rebuilt Muncie 4 speed tansmission, decent interior just needs cleanup mainly, but also missing a few knobs on the doors and smalls like that.

Very dusty with a couple of body issues on the exterior. New tires and rims back in 2016-17. Has a photo history of the build to date albeit also in rough shape. The man building it died 2 years ago and never saw it completed.

Values on this type of car are all over the place. This one does not run at the moment. Needs a few minor things finished under the hood and a lot of tlc. I find them in fair to good condition, running and complete for around 7500 to 12k dollars and up from there depending on level of restoration, mods and etc.

What is this one really worth if I can buy one running, stock and fair condition for under 8k?

Apparently not 🙁

I told them I'm a player at around 4k since I didn't get any help. xD

Bit of an odd deal where there is a lot of miscellaneous parts and a bumper pull single-car hauler trailer, 4 engine blocks on stands in various build stages and etc.

They wanted 12k for the lot, but, going off of that price and what I saw, they probably think the car worth around 8k and the trailer at 2k.

A group of us went over to see if we could all come to some terms. A couple of mechanics that were there for the parts and a collector that needed one or two of the engine blocks then me who is toying with building/getting a car on the drag strip.

The car may be worth 5-7k as it is, idk. There's a nice engine and transmission in it, but, without seeing/hearing it run, tough to stretch too much money out. These cars, original engines and transmissions in really good shape with 60k miles and driving are around 12k. Saw one totally original with 30k original miles for 30k dollars.

I'll probably miss out on it with a low ball offer. We'll see.

Do you build engines or do bodywork?  It would be a fun project.  Always liked corvettes since I seen one flying around a corner as a kid with the cops right behind them shooting at each other.  Pretty cool thing to see even though it was a serious thing.

I tinker on engines and piddle on bodywork. xD

I am a car/truck/race enthusiast and see investments like that car as safer than the fake money markets so looking to put my expendable income in a project like that. Especially after getting the itch at the drag race a coupla weeks back.

Hawg,

After seeing the pics, I would pass... especially if numbers don't match.

The restoration costs, if done by those who really know what they are doing will be way beyond what you would expect. Outside of the auctions, if you have any local "Cars and Coffee" shows like we have out here in Cali ( of which I attend every week )... it would be worth your time to go. The Vette info you will get should be very helpful.

Also keep in mind that more and more American muscle cars have peaked and are starting to depreciate due to the fact that those who kept the market propped up are much older or dying off and the millennial's are not interested in investing in them.

I don’t know man, I’m sure some people enjoy fixing cars but if I’m shelling out over 6k that shit better be road ready I’m not beat for any fixer uppers

my first job I worked at one of the tenants had 2 identical gray stingrays in the parking garage, the guy must have been dead in his apartment because both cars had all the tires flat and about 2 inches of dust on it

Yeah, that was my sentiments on the car. I don't need it, so, I offered 4k. If I get it for that, I think around 3-4 more thousand it'll be in pretty good shape.

I think they're gonna pass on it though. For some reason they think the car is worth over 6k. If they say they'll take 4 in the next few days I may still be a player.

I agree. That's why I can't see offering them that much.

See this one on autotrader...

I'm taking a risk at 4k and assuming the hot rodder that was building it was good.

I bought the GTO Judge new in 1970.  Now retired I gave some thought to buying a restored one at auction perhaps to relive a few memories.  I’ve watched a number of Mecum auctions on tv and have noted how much money it can cost to fully restore one.

Having said this there is a Corvette club that has a huge event in Ocean City, MD the end of every September/early October.  Billed as the largest in the eastern U. S.  Seems like there were hundreds of classic Vettes which included a boardwalk parade on Saturday.  My wife and I have been several times and absolutely love it.  Whether you buy/restore the car or not, depending on where you live it might be worth looking into.  https://ococean.com/events/free-state-corvette-weekend

And, OC has two huge hot rod shows with the biggest coming up in the middle of May:  “Cruisin OC.”  3,500+ registered cars and 150,000 people over four days (although I don’t know what the coronovirus might do to it this year).  We’ve gone six or seven of the last ten years and absolutely love it.  Large display area with many vendors.  https://specialeventpro.com/cruisin-ocean-city is the link.

Pansma City Beach, Myrtle Beach, Louisville and s number of others come to mind.  If you haven’t been to one of these I think if you go you’d really have a good time.

Buy low sell high...

Okay, 4K is on the table. If they want to sell it they will.

Never offer hoping it will be a good deal. It is easier to offer more if you figure out the history than it is to drop your offer.

Play the waiting game if you are unsure. Fiberglass is easy to repair if you know how and YouTube is your friend at "how too's", cosmetics are the easy part in after markets.

Mechanics are the money pit... be careful if it's been dead for awhile. I can see the carb is going to need to be rebuilt or at least gone over. Belts and lube's are cheap but it all adds up. If you think 3K to get er on track... At 7K for a track worthy Corvette. Why not if you got the time, money and desire. You only live as HawgGoneIt once...

We have a huge swap meet and car show here in Moultrie twice a year. I've seen the good, bad and ugly. Almost pulled the trigger on a few different toys at different times but end up backing out almost every time. Last fall I all but bought a MG for 3500. It was worth that just for the fun I'd have had driving it home that day probably, but, a cooler head prevailed before exchanging cash.

C3 Corvettes aren't as desirable as the earlier models really. There is a niche type group for them and that's it. The 77 was the last year they had the flat back glass which is the only thing making those more desirable than the next few years.

What I run into on them, is, people always think they are worth more than they really are, much like this one I'm onto in that barn. Even at the car shows, they have ridiculous prices on them generally for what they are and their condition.

This barn find was apparently this deceased gentleman's pride and joy, so, they're claiming he's went all out on the engine build. It's obvious he has several extra hundreds in chromed out a/c compressor, alternator, intake and etc., with billet pedals and that type stuff in all the cool spots. They just have a sentimental attachment that I think if after 2 years already passed, they can't get over, they may as well close the barn and wait 2 more. By then the car will be an inch thick in dust and probably for sure rodents will have chewed the wires and ruined it.

Actually, the carb was covered, I uncovered it for the pic.

I only notice a few things amiss on the engine. The alternator needed adjusted to line up the pulleys, the a/c compressor is missing it's mounting kit, which they claim is there somewhere.

It looked like the wiring was pretty well completed, but, due to the nature of the car, I couldn't look under it.

I never owned a vette, and really never thought I'd be on the hook for one really. I mean, you can't even get groceries in the thing. Lol. No back seat, no trunk, just two buckets and a few hundred hp.

If they take the 4k, I'll be ok with it. No way I give them any more than that. They have my offer and number. In the meantime, I'll watch for another deal to happen. Some things are just meant to be, others, eh, not so much.

can never tell from pics, but i would not go any higher, unless there was some real reason like valuable rare parts in the pile.

a 45 yo basket case WILL take significantly more to restore than just buying one in better shape...the best reason to restore that one would be for 'sentimental reasons'.  Fiberglass may not rust but everything else underneath certainly does.

Like I said tho, can't tell from just pictures....

If you can readily drop engines in your garage and do....then there might be something there for you...but if you are just a normal weekend tinkerer, Then my advise is find something in much better shape (like almost 'restored' and everything lol) and you will STILL have PLENTY to tinker with......

Just sayin'

Love personal plates.

Have a sell coming up with some very old Model A's.

Starting price on the fully restored is 35,000.

One needs some work but is in excellent shape. Not sure how much.

Another is a Truck up on a lift, most parts are there but not sure of the asking price yet.

I don't set the prices, just assist in the sells.

Dude must be smoking the cheapest cigars....

Like who in their right mind would show an Auburn with all the trim chromed ???

Even Bigdrop should know that a brass era car in chrome is worse than a cheap cigar...

Bravo, sir!

...deep respect for your knowledge and I’m guessing many stories that would inspire a large box of Cohibas!

....and a glass or snifter or two.

I’m telling you:  standing on the side of Ocean Highway with a glass and a cigar while watching a ‘57 Chevy, ‘79 Vette or an Auburn roll by (or even burn rubber) ain’t so bad.

The owner of the shop where I built my first car had an all brass Auburn that was a masterpiece....

Made a mockery of his 63 split window...

There was a time when getting a car meant getting your freedom to a certain degree.

Probably why this gen doesn't quite understand it.
