Quarterback JT Daniels of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana has notified USC he will attempt to reclassify up to the Class of 2018 and enroll at the university next month, according to a source within the football program with knowledge of the situation.

The source could not confirm when Daniels, Mater Dei or USC would acknowledge such a move, which would require NCAA approval because Daniels is currently a high school junior.

Daniels, the Gatorade national player of the year, was asked last weekend if he would return to Mater Dei next season and said, “I will.” He has repeatedly denied he would leave high school early.

However, sources at USC said Daniels has been working for months to reclassify from a junior to a senior. What remains to be seen is whether Daniels gets NCAA approval. But it’s hardly a unique obstacle because Sierra Canyon star basketball player Marvin Bagley was reclassified last summer and enrolled at Duke.

The move is not contingent on Sam Darnold going pro but is considered a win-win for Daniels. If Darnold stays, Daniels gets a year in the system. If Darnold leaves, Daniels will immediately compete for the starting job against Matt Fink and Jack Sears.

One source inside the program considers Daniels the frontrunner in such a competition. Remember, former Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley won the job as a true freshman. Darnold was the most impressive quarterback at USC as a true freshman but would never get a chance to play ahead of entrenched starter Cody Kessler.

USC coach Clay Helton didn’t even have the courage to start Darnold ahead of Max Browne at the start of the 2016 season despite Darnold’s better training camp performances.

But Helton will not be able to deny Daniels if he is the best quarterback, simply because he has more pressure on him from Athletic Director Lynn Swann after this year’s season that often failed to pass the eye test.

Fink came to USC projected as a backup. Sears was considered the likely replacement to Darnold next season but that was before Daniels committed last summer.

Whoever wins the job next spring or fall would likely get replaced if they struggle because Helton cannot afford to lose four or five games. Helton started Darnold in the fourth game of the 2016 season and the Trojans were already 1-3.

>>Does anyone think USC guard De’Anthony Melton will play another game for the Trojans? The prospects seem worse than ever after USC prevented him from going to Hawaii with rest of the team and is investigating new information.

Inside the program, the concern is not really over whether Melton will be allowed to play but whether the FBI will release more information that could involve other players or coaches. Whatever happens, it sure looks like USC (6-4) is affected by the on-going investigation.

>>Former USC All-American Chris Claiborne is the new coach at Calabasas High School. Among the assistant coaches he hired are former USC wide receiver Curtis Conway and former NFL player Michael Pittman Sr., the father of USC wide receiver Michael Pittman, Jr.

>>USC leaves Saturday for the Cotton Bowl, but how much will the Trojans actually see of Dallas? The game is no longer played in the actual Cotton Bowl but in Arlington, Texas. The team will stay in the suburbs away from the city. There might an excursion or two to Dallas, but it won’t be like in 1995 when the Trojans spent the week in the Big D.

I’ve been told by few people he’s too old to play next year. If he was still 17 wouldn’t he be able to play?

He could play but he’d be old as hell. Same reason James Cook (Miami RB) reclassified and committed to UGA this year. He’s already 18 as a junior and you can’t be 19 and play in Florida so Cook has no choice

The true age rumor has been around for awhile. I started hearing the rumors (multiple sources, including MD parents) he'd be coming to BG his Sr. year for over a year. If you believe he is 17, well I have some ocean front property I'd like to sell you.

Holding kids back has become very popular & this "re-classifying" now happening in football like it has been happening in hoops, may just lead to a whole new level of positioning your child.

In order to keep getting the high profile transfers the Stache must continue to schedule high profile  OOS TV games
