Marquis also had the benefit that alot of coaches don't get.

Warner Robins is a warm patient community.

The BOE hired him and gave him the reigns they let him do what he needed to do and actually coach.

They didn't put a leash on him...

He's proof that when you let a coach do their job without the backseat coaching good things can happen

What happened to Northside's program?

Like Hawg said-

Marquis came back and turned WRHS around.

Northside WR legendary HC Conrad Nix retired...

Kevin Kinsler the last remnant of the Nix Northside dynasty Retired also... he won 2 and retired...

And its been regression ever since...

Northside was a tough out for anybody in the state back in the three runs and a cloud of dust days. Maybe when 4A was the top classification.

The entire landscape has changed with the proliferation of the forward pass. Hahaha.

I'm joking kind of.

I remember the days when central and south GA ruled.  And it wasn't THAT long ago, really.  Some younger folks would be surprised that ATL football didn't have much going for it at one time, which was kinda odd for a metro in the South.

Look at some of the talent that came out of the Seattle metro area last year.  Could build a nice all-star team around them.  This recruiting service had 7 from Miami in the top 250 and 6 from Seattle...and Miami metro area population is slightly over 1.5X the size.  Seattle-area teams might be worth a closer look in the future.

“If” this is accurate or close… 10 returning starters.

@cnd123Some of the oldies (sorry veterans) including myself ? your opinion.

You definitely seem in the know for WA.
@Woodersonis our resident expert on AZ and provides concrete details for us to review and get to know the history, makeup, current scenario etc.  He’s been a tad quiet since the semis though 😉.  Saguaro!  :)

Would be great if you can give us some in-state insight on the comparisons vs the Bellevue, Skykine and recently EC teams of yesteryear.

My initial thought was if they’ve got half the squad in new starting spots… and had to play Bellevue’s early opponents of the past.  How would stratomatic HS football see that turning out?  :)

The Rivals HS forum board was peaking during Bellevue’s run.  2012 vs Euless Trinity.  Myles Jack was a beast playing both ways.
Perhaps Budda Baker was also on that season’s roster?  Can’t remember.  Both NFL players.

Edit:  Fuck.  😂 misread 10 as total and realize that was the O.  16 of 21 starters returned.  Well still would appreciate a summary.  :)

I'm just spit-balling, but there are a couple factors in GK's favor that I like.

During Bellevue's heyday they would play a big out of state matchup early in the season. Teams from California or Texas. Bellevue generally did pretty well in those games and then went on to win the state 3A title.

Couple points to make right off the bat on that info. When playing an early season OOS game, you don't really know how good that team is going to be. Bellevue beat some high ranked opponents that then went on to finish with 2 or more losses (De La Salle, Euless Trinity, Long Beach, etc.)

Compare that with GK who beat the #3 undefeated 7A Georgia champ....in the last game of the season. That means more to me than an early season win over Euless Trinity who finishes 10-3 and bows out in the quarterfinals or whatever it was.

The second thing is that Bellevue is notorious for cheating and recruiting, unfortunately. Many people believe they purposefully stay at 3A for sports instead of moving up to the generally stiffer competition in 4A.

3A is weird in WA state because it has Bellevue and some really strong private school programs like Eastside Catholic and O'Dea, so 3A can produce some strong champions. However, by and large 4A is the tough classification and has more "solid" teams in the divisions. The South Puget Sound League GK is in is traditionally very competitive. And GK blanked most of the teams in that league on defense.

Combine these factors with CH being the highest ranked OOS team a WA state team has beaten at the end of the year, ever, and that why I believe GK 2021 is the best overall team from the state.

Back in 08, Northside easily beat Booker T of Miami.  That may not have been one of BTW's best teams, but they were arguably as good as any team in Miami that year.

WA State has been experiencing a population boom over the past few decades and the caliber of the players has gone way up. The state has always produced a weird amount of blue chip QBs, but finding lineman was a problem that California solved for UW and WSU. Now there is starting to be talent at all positions. A big part of this is the growth of the Polynesian community which is by far the largest in the US outside of Hawaii.

Another factor is the rise of 7 on 7. WA has two elite 7 on 7 teams, Ford Sports Performance and Heir Sports. Ford Sports Performance has won multiple national tournaments. The rise of these type of teams and the focus on 7 on 7 for skill players has turned football into a year round sport and has really been embraced up here.

Lastly, lets be real, Seattle might as well be Alaska for most of the country. It is far from everywhere and there isn't as many eyeballs on the schools up here as there is in California or the South. I think this has traditionally kept the region under the radar for most casual fans. This is starting to change as you are now seeing schools like Ohio State swoop into traditional UW/USC territory by signing 3 blue chips from the state since 2019...4 star receiver Gee Scott, 5 star receiver Emeka Egbuka, and 5 star D-lineman JT Tuimoloau.

This is causing strife on the UW recruiting boards who are used to losing the occasional big time recruit to Oregon or USC, but not to Ohio State.

BTW was ranked 41st in Florida that year. NWR was ranked 9th in Georgia. If the ranking were reversed you would have a similar outcome

I think a number of people could easily argue that 4A BTW team was much better than 41.  It took a last minute TD for 6A state finalist Northwestern to beat them.  BTW played 4A state finalist Dwyer within 3 points, losing out on a tie due to a missed fg.  And BTW beat 6A Miami Central, who beat Northwestern.  Beyond me how a team that can play with the best in S FL regardless of class is #41 in Florida.

An interesting mix of really good and mediocre you have there. Are you sure you're not mixing up Ballard with Bothell?

It’s possible. The game against the AZ team was a preseason game that didn’t count (Think IMG vs Columbia)

But they still have the game listed and it probably effects the ranking a little bit

I love when people mention all the close losses to prop up a team but not the close wins like against #4614 Southridge.

And I remember that Central game. They were getting crushed and had to rally furiously to win it late.

Guess the Georgia boys on here must be glad a team from Tampa like Plant never crossed the border.  Poor Lowndes and Colquitt County would get exposed.
