To me it means he did not dominate his sport. I would favor Joe Louis or Jack Johnson as best heavyweights of all time.

I think your view implies that Marciano or Klitschko were the best heavyweights.

Besides, I'm using "greatest" in a way that it includes his total effect or impact on the world, which seems legitimate, since no one has stated the criteria and since it's not an uncommon practice when generating lists like this.

Deion Sanders should be on any list for best athlete ever

+1 to Primetime as well.

Ok, I know I'm going to get shidded on here for this but since many are mentioning boxing legends, I'm going to throw this out there....

Jon Jones, picograms or not, is one hell of an athlete and is IMO the most dominant fighter of all time.  The guy beats specialist in their own style.   Plus I'd never seen a guy get outta an armbar like this!

I'd agree if he hadn't been caught so many times. I don't think you get full credit for a win if you got the win by cheating.

But what about the Japanese man that Nathan's won't let compete because he wanted to compete in other competitions also?

Chestnut is 2-0 vs Kobayashi at the Nathans and owns a dominant record over him in all other competitions. Rumor has it, the losses were why Kobayashi stopped competing in the Nathan's.

I've been misinformed then. Who would have thought that the journalism on competitive hot dog eating would be suspect.

It was a derivative of "boar" as his family compared him to a wild boar. There was a story that said that originated from Bo (as a kid) throwing rocks at hogs but may be more of a not-so-urban legend.

I submit Herschel Walker for consideration. Heisman winner with a strong pro career, elite level sprinter in college, qualified for an Olympic bobsled team with minimal training in the event, and went undefeated in MMA when decided to take up that sport as a 50-year old. Also danced with Fort Worth ballet if you're into that sort of thing.

The story I read about 30 years ago, dunno if its true or not, is that while in high school, Jackson and a few of his buddies were causing some late night mischief on a farm.  The farmer ran them off and called the cops.  When the cops asked if he recognized any of the kids, his reply was "only that Jackson kid, taking off like a wild bo' through the woods".

The name stuck.

All we know about Ruth is that he was a GREat baseball player who could also PITCH....18-3 .....I believe..

Babe Ruth won like 3 World Series as a pitcher, hew won 20 games a few times, and I am pretty sure led the league in ERA 1 Year...

I think Ruth could be the Greatest Athlete ever, they only downside is that Baseball was Segragated back then....

Not his fault, just the unfortunate way things were at the time... 🙂

Ruth was the most dominant by far. He's not the best athlete ever but he's the most dominant in his sport. I'd put Usain Bolt second. Or Gretz.

Gretzky dominated hockey more so. As the all-time leading goal scorer, he would be the all-time points leader without scoring a single goal.

Also, Joey Chestnut won 9 out of 10 Nathan Hot Dog Eating Contests. Nobody has come remotely close to it. Kobayashi only could do it 4 times.

Not too shabby from the mound...

And I'm not sure this includes post season where he pitched 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in the World Series.

Add in the 714 homers and .344 lifetime average and this guy was a baseball god.
