MA Fan
Haverhill MA traveled to Jacksonville to play undefeated Duval High. According to contemporary articles it was the first time a top Northern team had played a top Southern team and there was a lot of interest--The Boston Post sent a writer to Florida with the Haverhill team, and the other Boston papers also had daily reports of the trip. After Haverhill won the game 27-0, they received challenges from several other top teams--there was even the possibility of a New Years Day game in Pasadena against a West Coast team (either Long Beach or Everett WA), but it didn't pan out. Imagine taking a train from Massachusetts to Florida for a high school game in 1920, getting back home, and hopping on another train to California a few weeks later. 5
MA Fan
Just a normal high school football weekend, being greeted by your state's senators on the way home from the game in Florida while you start making plans for the next game in California
Nolebull813
Duvall got the much needed experience after that game. They went on to win the National Championship in 1921. They beat Colquitt County that year. Lol.

Nolebull813
Haverhill must have been really good in 20, because Duval trounced Valdosta that year and Valdosta won the mythical Georgia state championship going 9-1. 1920 they gave Everett,WA and Oak Park,IL the split title. Both teams had a tie. Looks like Haverhill got shafted by the pollsters 1

Like age restrictions and 5th year players. Very cool thread. Thanks.

Hardly a thumping. West Springfield is a totally separate city from Springfield, BTW.

At first I thought maybe West Springfield didn’t break off from Springfield until after this game, but WS was incorporated in 1774. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
