High school cancels football season, fires every coach after suspended player suits up with different identity

A St. Louis high school has cancelled the rest of their football season and fired every coach on staff after a suspended player wore a different number and participated in a game. Cardinal Ritter College Prep, which was undefeated at 7-0, suspended the rest of their season after junior running back Bill Jackson was found to have played in their season opener, even though he was supposed to be serving a one-game suspension.

The RB was given the suspension after being ejected from last year's title game, but the team found a way to disguise Jackson, or so they thought.

Instead of his normal No. 4, he wore No. 24 and went under a freshman named "Marvin Burks." It was Jackson's tattoos that ended up giving him away. Jackson, as well as head coach Brandon Gregory, both went along with the lie that the junior didn't play, despite him actually putting up 109 yards on the ground and scoring a 56-yard touchdown in the 32-21 win.

Gregory said that the imaginary freshman Burks, "earned" the start and that "it was his time to play ball." Jackson also put his acting skills to the test saying, "Watching last week, it wasn't fun at all. It gave me a spark."

As a result of the incident in the most recent game, Cardinal Ritter school president Tamiko Armstead decided to void the entire season. The school also announced that every person on the coaching staff has been "permanently released."

Gregory was interviewed after the news was made public and acknowledged that "a mistake was made."

He also said that he did not know Jackson should have been suspended for a game.

"That's kinda my wrongdoing of not knowing the rules and that he shouldn't have not sat out the jamboree, he should have sat out week one so that's what happened" he said.

As for the coach's defense of Jackson wearing a different jersey, Gregory said "that's a thing our kids do on the regular basis, you know, they try to change jersey numbers and sometimes don't let us know."

That still doesn't explain Jackson being listed as a freshman with a fake name.

Damn shame.  1 game cost them the entire season.

I don't think the one game is what cost them the season.

It was the head coach and staff being dishonest that costed them the season, because, for once, a Roman Catholic school decided honesty and integrity was worth more than wins.

The coach, even in the face of the evidence and already having been fired is doubling down on the story that the kid didn't play under a different name and switched jersey numbers as kids sometimes do.

Here in this story, the kid at the center of this, mom speaks out, and basically says the coach is a positive influence on her son...

Yes, that 1 game where they decided to change the jersey number and roster name of the ineligible player. They friggin' listed him as a freshman, saying he earned the playing time in practice. When the kid who was suspended was asked about sitting out the game (that he played in under a different name, school class, etc.), he said he missed not being in there and was hungry to get back at it. The damn shame is that they all behaved as they did.

Off with their heads!

Off with their heads!

And now the coach is out doubling down on the lie.

I do feel bad for all the kids that were affected though. Certainly a learning moment for all of them. There are repercussions for dishonesty.

Ha, that coach seriously came out sounding about as dumb and guilty as you can get.  Reminds me of a certain fat orange fella. Lol

I feel for the kids that had  nothing to do with it.  Now their season is cut short.

Idk? The same kids who practiced with him, suited up, were in the huddle, blocked for and and knew for almost 2 months this went on. Kinda willing participants If you ask me. You’d hope maybe at least one kid out of the whole team would have better standards and figured maybe this whole “mystery back” thing was not so good and stepped up to do the right thing?

One problem with that...

Snitches get stitches...

How many high school kids want to deal with the "street code."

So you think the coach would then give the kids who came forward some  street justice for turning him in? Then he is even a bigger idiot.

Not saying he's THAT dumb...But can't rule it out.

We don't know the reason why none of the kids came forward.  Unfortunately with our society the way it is these days we can't rule out that possibility.

We are talking about St. Louis MO, and a team where the culture evidently left something to be desired or else the season wouldn't have gotten scrapped.

The "not coming forward" part probably played into the decision to just toss the season. That and they had no coaches left.
