What up Texas?

The depth and talent of Texas high school QBs has spurred a national recruiting spotlight and migration
To understand where this started, take a look at the late 1990s.

As Rockwall coach Rodney Webb and quarterback Braedyn Locke walked together after a weight room session last week, Webb shared some advice with his sophomore starter.

Keep your options open, Webb told Locke, because you can’t only think local.

The message was in reference to recruiters from five major college programs, including two outside Texas, coming to visit Locke in recent weeks.

And the sentiment also underscored the national spotlight and recruiting reach of Texas high school quarterbacks.

The depth and talent of Texas quarterbacks — who also dominate Power Five and NFL rosters — outweighs the supply of in-state scholarship options.

That at least six of the 2020 class’ top 10 quarterbacks in Texas, per 247Sports.com, signed with non-Texas Division I programs either during the December early period or will Wednesday on national signing day highlights the two-decade trend of local signal callers carrying country-wide prestige.

“There’s a little bit more of a premium on coming here for quarterbacks,” Webb said. “You look around the rest of the country and all the great quarterbacks in Texas are playing on all these different rosters, and to me, I would want to get to Texas to find my next quarterback.”

To understand the migration, start in the late 1990s.

The State 7on7 Organization in 1998 began what’s become one of the most comprehensive tournament circuits in the country for 7-on-7, the pass-only, quarterback-driven offseason football activity. The concept of spread offenses — strategies that rely heavily on shotgun formations and five-wide-receiver sets — took root in Texas around the same time, transforming most teams’ approaches from run-first to pass-heavy.

The combination led to more quarterback-centric plays during games. More film of quarterbacks for recruiters to watch. More opportunities for quarterbacks to read defenses, diagnose blitzes and learn how to counterattack.

“The bleedover from all that has allowed college recruiters to assess the quarterback position and evaluate them and see if it’s somebody they can work with,” said Rowlett coach Doug Stephens, also executive director of the State 7on7 Organization.

The 2020 recruiting class offers proof of the evolution.

Four of the country’s top 10 quarterback recruits, per 247Sports.com, are from Texas: Duncanville’s Ja’Quinden Jackson, Austin Lake Travis’ Hudson Card, Fort Bend Marshall’s Malik Hornsby and Longview’s Haynes King. No other state had more than three.

Other Texas quarterbacks below the four in the rankings — all rated at least three stars — are committed to out-of-state programs, including Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, Colorado, Iowa and Ole Miss.

Of the five quarterbacks in the SportsDayHS Top 100 for the Class of 2019, four signed with non-Texas colleges. So did six of nine in the 2018 Top 100 and six of 10 in 2017.

It follows the molds of the Saints’ Drew Brees (Austin Westlake to Purdue) and the Bears’ Chase Daniel (Southlake Carroll to Missouri). After transfers from in-state programs, the Browns’ Baker Mayfield (Lake Travis, Oklahoma) and the Cardinals’ Kyler Murray (Allen, Oklahoma) found their Heisman-Trophy-worthy success outside Texas, too.

In total, eight of the primary starting quarterbacks during the 2019 NFL season played at Texas high schools, and several back-ups did, too. On Power Five conference rosters during the 2019 season, 47 quarterbacks were from Texas, including 14 in the SEC and 23 in the Big 12.

“The landscape is just littered with Texas quarterbacks,” Webb said.

The national perspective doesn’t reflect an issue with quarterback recruiting for in-state Power Five teams.

Jackson and Card have signed with Texas; King with A&M. Hornsby is uncommitted but projected to choose Baylor. The five Power Five programs in Texas — Baylor, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech — all recruit nationally, expanding their search beyond Texas high school football.

Most colleges sign only one quarterback per recruiting cycle, so schematic fit, offer and commitment timing, coaching turnover and transfer opportunities influence decisions, too.

That’s what Grapevine Faith senior quarterback Deuce Hogan internalized during his recruitment.

Though his mom tried to coax him to stay close as a “Texas boy” and though he talked with former Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck, former Baylor coach Matt Rhule and Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher, Hogan found his best fit in Iowa.

There, Hogan will work in the pro-style passing offense, trusts coach Kirk Ferentz’ tenure and had emerged as the Hawkeyes’ top 2020 quarterback target while Hogan was developing in Grapevine, more than 800 miles away.

“There’s a lot of talent here,” Hogan said, “and we’re all trying to find our home and where we’re wanted.”

Inner-city football teams are getting blown out on Friday nights. Should UIL consider more factors during realignment?

Here’s a statistic that summarizes District 6-5A Division I football the last two seasons: 0-32.

Here’s another: 1,819-138.

The first statistic is the record the four Dallas ISD teams in the district — Bryan Adams, Samuell, Sunset and Woodrow Wilson — had against the rest of 6-5A Division I, made up of perennial playoff teams Highland Park, Lancaster, Mansfield Legacy and Mansfield Timberview. The second statistic is the combined scores from those games.

Tony Benedetto just completed his first season as Woodrow Wilson’s head coach. He doesn’t attribute those statistics to coaching or talent. He attributes it to participation numbers and the challenges of playing an opponent with a larger varsity roster.“That’s the gap,” Benedetto says.

A gap that the University Interscholastic League doesn’t consider.

On Monday, the UIL will announce district alignments for the next two years. To group nearly 1,400 schools across the state, the UIL looks at two main factors: enrollment to decipher classification and geographic proximity.

UIL realignment regulations state “socioeconomic factors are not considered,” an element some states are now contemplating.

If Texas were to consider those factors, it might level the football playing field. Otherwise, on-field results may continue to be foreshadowed every other February for innercity districts in the state. An uneven playing field

From an enrollment perspective, DISD football teams align comparably with their district opponents, but that’s only one layer, according to coaches and administrators inside the district.

Dig a little deeper and you’ll see there’s usually a big difference between the size of innercity football rosters and that of their opponents, a factor that doesn’t bode well for DISD teams and a reality that some say creates an uneven playing field.

“Unfortunately we have schools that have a lot more resources within 10-15 miles of us that [the UIL] is going to put in our district with us,” Seagoville head coach Andy Gutierrez said.

Seagoville, which competed in District 6-5A Division II last season, often fielded 30 players or fewer during varsity games, Gutierrez said.

Those in DISD, however, won’t use that as an excuse.

“We’ll line up with whoever they align us with,” DISD executive director of athletics Silvia Salinas said.

Still, she believes the UIL should consider participation numbers during realignment periods.

It’s especially key in football, a sport that fields 11 people on a team at one time and requires multiples of that to have success.

Salinas said her communication to DISD coaches is about the success of the student, not just the athlete. And while not the main focus, athletic success does play into a student’s development and motivation, she agreed.

“There are scoreboards for a reason — we get it,” Salinas said.

Last season, DISD teams had a combined record of 28-81 against non-DISD teams. Madison, a 3A school which had a similar roster size to its non-DISD opponents, had seven of those wins.

Not just in Dallas

Take a look around the state, and you’ll see similar stories for innercity teams.

Justin Northwest played in a district with six Fort Worth ISD schools the last two seasons. Northwest went 12-0, including all six of its regular season wins last season.

In District 11-5A Division II, Fort Bend Marshall, Fort Bend Willowridge and Manvel all went undefeated against their five Houston ISD opponents the last two seasons.

Games on an uneven playing field sometimes aren’t beneficial for the winners, either.

“It’s really hard to say that we could take anything from [the Sunset] game and use it as quality reps,” Mansfield Timberview head coach James Brown told The Dallas Morning News earlier this year after an 84-0 win. “When you run 11 plays and you only get tackled two times and everything else is a score, it’s a really hard game to manage. And it’s really hard to sit there and evaluate film.”

Those on the outside might say a lack of resources translates to a lack of success for innercity teams, but DISD coaches won’t.

“We just make do with what we got,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez and Benedetto were quick to point out that resources are coming. A $1.6 billion bond passed in 2015 included $233 million for “educational adequacy improvements,” which included improvements to athletic facilities. A new fieldhouse, for example, is expected to open soon at Seagoville.

“If you would’ve seen that fieldhouse before, you would’ve laughed at it because it was a bunch of cinderblocks from 30 years ago,” Gutierrez said, laughing himself.

In addition, a proposed $3.7 billion bond for the 2020 election would reportedly include $133 million for five indoor practice facilities.

DISD has made an effort to improve facilities, but according to Benedetto, that’s not the reason teams are struggling.

“Every school is so unique and so different to the community in which it serves,” he said. “We’re not purposely 200 kids behind in participation. That’s the community we serve, and it’s not the same to what we’re being put up against.”

Bridging the gap

The UIL did not respond to an email asking about the inclusion of socioeconomic factors into realignment decisions and any discussions about possible changes.

Other states, however, do consider factors aside from enrollment.

Colorado, Minnesota and Oregon currently have “added provisions allowing schools with high poverty levels to drop down to lower athletic divisions,” and Washington is introducing similar provisions in 2020, according to a New York Times report in September.

Some wonder how it could be done in a state as big as Texas, but on the basis of participation levels, that’s something Benedetto would like to see.

After his first season at Woodrow Wilson ended with a 3-7 record, Benedetto attended a 4A playoff game. Something clicked with him watching it. He saw a comparable level of competition and participation to the four Dallas ISD schools in his district.

“I’m watching this and thinking this would be much more beneficial for our kids if that was something [the UIL] ever did,” he said.

Maybe that would close the gap.

If this comes to be this will be the toughest damn District in Texas in any Class

3 more predictions that will be very good districts.  Look at 8-6A if that comes to pass I will spend a lot of time in the South Suburbs watching football.

4-6A: Arlington, Arlington Bowie, Arlington Lamar, Arlington Martin, Arlington Sam Houston, Mansfield, Mansfield Lake Ridge

5-6A: Euless Trinity, Haltom, Hurst L.D. Bell, Keller, Keller Central, Keller Fossil Ridge, Keller Timber Creek, Southlake Carroll

8-6A: Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville, Grand Prairie, South Grand Prairie, Waco, Waco Midway, Waxahachie

Time for HP to pay thier dues 😁.

Jk.  They'll be a threat and wouldn't surprise me if they're Top 2 in that district.

Miss USA 2019 is a Former Gamecock Trackster.    Cheslie Kryst.   Anyone against Inter-racial relationships should just peep at this. Polish American Father and African American Mom.  Damn she's fine.

Hot damn!!!

Course, you had to know from the get-go with a name like "Chelsie", she had to have some honky in her!
