MD87
Maxpreps argues that the current MD "mini dynasty" (2016 season to the present) is one of the best ever. For the MD homers, I've put together a couple resources for you to geek out over if you'd like, covering the 2016 season up to the present. First of all, you'll find below MD player rankings, all based on the 247 composite index (which is a reasonably exhaustive, reasonably objective standard), as follows: best overall, best by position, and comparison of teams by position, number of stars, etc. Secondly, you can click here for a Google Sheet that gives a much better visual of how the teams compare (including gold, silver and bronze for the top 3 teams according to number of stars overall, and by position group). (If the MD faithful send me a private message, I'll give you the link to the "editable" version of the spreadsheet, as your expertise may uncover some mistakes that need to be corrected and you are free to make corrections if you so desire.) In both of these resources, please know I'm fully aware that the rankings for some players on the 2021 spring team and 2021 Fall national champs are incomplete for the underclassmen. I'll only be able to properly complete (and, ultimately, judge) these teams by the criteria used here, in a year or two, when the rankings of these newer players are complete. In other words, we won't know where the spring and fall 2021 teams really rank (at least according to these criteria) for a couple years, possibly. Enjoy! (if you're sick like that!) HurricaneNick
My close friend, fellow alumnus, & current MD assistant Josh Higgins (brick maker genius) is making it clear that if Westlake wants a game for next year we can make it happen. Traveling will not be an issue. We are hoping to go to Aquinas in FL as well. If you want to play MD, it is not hard to get the game made. Simple. I will be riding bikes with him this Sunday AM, if you know of any team with interest in playing let me know and I will share!

Ga96
10 hours ago, MD87 said: Maxpreps argues that the current MD "mini dynasty" (2016 season to the present) is one of the best ever. Enjoy! (if you're sick like that!) MD87
10 hours ago, MD87 said: Maxpreps argues that the current MD "mini dynasty" (2016 season to the present) is one of the best ever. Enjoy! (if you're sick like that!) RedZone
11 hours ago, MD87 said: Maxpreps argues that the current MD "mini dynasty" (2016 season to the present) is one of the best ever. Enjoy! (if you're sick like that!) Must have been a slow day at work or you are trying to avoid doing work around the house 😂 LOL! A little bit of the latter. Was staying up for the Tuesday night games anyway, and it's something I've been toying with doing for a while anyway. 1

It’s not necessarily the volume of transfers but the quality. The two star guys don’t make that much difference. But, it’s not just transfers that have helped to shape the beast. With the recent success of the program, it’s become much easier to influence athletes to apply to MD. Some just want to join a winner and others are guided in that direction by folks not directly associated with the program, but whose interests are related. Nobody is stupid enough to recruit actively, but the “passive” underground railway is very active. As long as they don’t do anything CIF can charge them with, MD will continue to bolster their roster unabated. Sooner or later though, someone’s gonna slip up. It will have to be egregious and easily proven though, because MD has access to more than enough money to defend it’s practices.

When programs like these go down it is almost always an implosion from the inside. De-escalation, De-emphasizing, taking things in a different direction, going back to the mission and purpose of the school are the types of things you will hear. It will happen. always does it's just a matter of when.

Since 1985, there has been only a handful of years when there wasn’t someone from my wife’s immediate or extended family in attendance at Mater Dei. Two of her younger brothers attended, three nephews (one currently) and two nieces(one also current). A few have been involved in the football program. Over the years, I’ve seen some good things, and some not so good things come out of the school. In particular, one of her cousins, and a cousins husband, who attended many years ago, and are both very successful financially and in their family lives as well, have recently enrolled their sons in another TL school. When you ask them why, it’s for reasons like you stated. Academic dilution and a no holds barred focus on multi-inclusivity and having to accept associated behaviors, are among the specific reasons explained to me. It’s not that MD isn’t still a good school, and a great choice for some, but their’s more mediocrity associated with the school than in past years. Still, they’ve built one hell of a football program so why sweat the small stuff?

Re academics, I know that the academic decathlon team has won several regional championships recently and regularly makes state finals (I’m friends with the coach who was also there when I was a student). So the claim of diluted academics is surprising.

Re academics, I know that the academic decathlon team has won several regional championships recently and regularly makes state finals (I’m friends with the coach who was there when I was a student). So the claim of diluted academics is surprising. To answer your first question no, not specific to that. Mater Dei has long been tolerant to LGBT concerns and has allowed for gay students to flourish for some time now. It has more to do with unequal treatment of students for the same behaviors based on differences in social background and experience. Regarding academics, sure MD will continue to have students that excel. But I know of four fairly recent graduates from my wife’s family that went directly into the workforce and are doing in truth, below average relative to their peers. Those who graduated some time back, went directly to college and are doing better than average. At no time in history do I think parents of non-gifted athletes have to consider the “value” of an MD education relative to public school education more than for the current state. MD has become less the equivalent of let’s say a Stanford or Notre Dame, than an Oklahoma or Ohio State. Now, to be fair, there are more TL students than ever opting for a couple years of junior college first, before attending university according to a friend I know that works at a local juco, so the trend is greater than just MD. 1

MD got to the point that they are at right now due to ballers transferring in. This is not debatable. Now that MD is established as a national powerhouse most of the ballers are starting out at MD from freshmen year now. They are still going to get their transfers of course but my guess is any kid transferring in to MD is most likely going to be a legit D1 baller otherwise it's pointless unless they like to ride pine. Case in point is I know two youth kids from Sacramento (grant jr pacers) who are both currently in 8th grade and are "Deciding" if they should go play for SJB/MD or stay local and go to Folsom. Both of these kids already have D1 offers and even left the pacers to play for the OG Ducks this season. Yes they actually drove/flew to SoCal just to play on weekends. While on the OG Ducks they were introduced to the big 2 catholic schools by their youth coaches. Youth coaches, 7v7 coaches, and fitness trainers ALL play a role in the current landscape on where the best players go to play. Welcome to 2022. Welcome to 2022. And in some cases, boosters, albeit in carefully concealed ways. I have no doubt that at some point direct significant financial support to athletes from outside sources will be allowed and at that point interest will wane. But, if your school gets in on the action, why not root for the Folsom Nike Bulldogs lol. Maybe Cen10 can tap into local corporate giant Monster Energy drinks. Go Minster Energy Huskies LOL. 2
